What do the infallibles (a.) say about the imitation (Taqlid) of the ancestors?

Answer:

Al-Hasan Ibn Ali reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “One exits from faith (Iman) through five kinds of deeds. They are all similar and famous: The disbelief (kufr), the association (shirk), the misguidance, transgression (fisq) and the committing of the great (sins). With disbelief it is meant every transgression, by which one disobeys God through denial, rejection, disrespect and belittling of everything small and great, and whoever does this is an disbeliever. The meaning of this lies in the meaning of the disbelief of every community, whatever it may be, and of every group, whatever it may be, because when one is described with these qualities,then one is an disbeliever. When he is inclined to denial, rejection, disrespect and belittling, he becomes disbelieving, and when he desires to disobey by way of interpretation, imitation (Taqlid), taking and accepting the words of his fathers and ancestors, then he is engaged in association (Shirk).” [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah by Al-Hurr Al-Amili, Volume 1 Page 36 Hadith 15]

الحسن بن علي بن شعبة في تحف العقول عن الصادق عليه السلام في حديث قال: ويخرج من الايمان بخمس جهات من الفعل، كلها متشابهات معروفات: الكفر، والشرك، والضلال، والفسق، وركوب الكبائر، فمعنى الكفر كل معصية عصى الله بها بجهة الجحد والانكار والاستخفاف والتهاون في كل ما دق وجل، وفاعله كافر، ومعناه معنى كفر من أي ملة كان ومن أي فرقة كان بعد أن يكون بهذه الصفات فهو كافر – إلى أن قال – فإن كان هو الذي مال بهواه إلى وجه من وجوه المعصية بجهة الجحود والاستخفاف والتهاون فقد كفر، وإن هو مال بهواه إلى التدين بجهة التأويل والتقليد والتسليم والرضا بقول الآباء والأسلاف فقد أشرك
