How did the infallible (a.) deal with those who sought imitation?

Answer:
Al-Hajjaj Al-Khaibari reported that he spoke to Imam Muhammad Al-Baqir (a.): “We narrate from you narrations, whereupon some of us say: “Our statement about it is their statement.” He said: “So what do you want? Do you want to be an Imam and be imitated? Whoever attributes the statement to us is on the safe side.” [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah by Al-Hurr Al-Amili, Vol. 27 page 130 Hadith 19]

وعن أحمد بن محمد، عن علي بن الحكم، عن أبي بكر الحضرمي عن الحجاج بن الصباح قال: قلت لأبي جعفر عليه السلام: إنا نحدث عنك بالحديث فيقول بعضنا قولنا قولهم قال: فما تريد؟ أتريد أن تكون إماما يقتدى بك؟! من رد القول إلينا فقد سلم
