Question:

How do you pray when you ask God for the right decision (Istikharah)?

Answer:

Ishaq Ibn Ammar reported that he spoke to Imam As-Sadiq (a.): “It may be that i want something about which i have a divided opinion on.One of them orders me to do it and the other forbids me to do it.” He said: “If you are like this, pray two bowings (Rak’ah) and ask God a hundred and one time for a decision. See for which of them you have the most certainty, and act upon it, for the right choice, God willing, is in it, and your request for decision shall be for a good condition, for sometimes the good for a person lies in severing his hand, or the death of his child, or the disappearance of his fortune.” [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah of Al-Amili, Vol. 8 page 65 Hadith 6]

وعن علي بن محمد، عن سهل بن زياد، عن محمد بن عيسى، عن عمرو بن إبراهيم، عن خلف بن حماد، عن إسحاق بن عمار، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام، قال: قلت له: ربما أردت الامر يفرق مني فريقان: أحدهما يأمرني، والاخر ينهاني؟ قال: فقال إذا كنت كذلك فصل ركعتين واستخر الله مائة مرة ومرة، ثم انظر أجزم الامرين لك فافعله فان الخيرة فيه إن شاء الله، ولتكن استخارتك في عافية فإنه ربما خير للرجل في قطع يده وموت ولده وذهاب ماله

Murazim reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “If any of you want something, let him pray two Rak’ah. Then he should express the praise of God and His glory and send blessings (Salawat) for the Prophet and the people of his house and say: “God, if this thing is good for me because of my faith and this world, then make it easier for me and decide it and if it is not, then keep me away from it.” i asked him: “What should i read for the two bowings (Rak’ah)?” He said: “Read in it,according to which your mind stood,and when your mind stood after it, then read in it: “Say: He is God, the only one.”(112:1) As well as: “Say: O you unbelievers!” (109:1) Whereat “He is God, one and only.” (112:1) Equals one third of the Qur’an.” [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah of Al-Amili, vol. 8 page 65 – 66 Hadith 7]

محمد بن علي بن الحسين باسناده عن مرازم قال: قال لي أبو عبد الله عليه السلام: إذا أراد أحدكم شيئا فليصل ركعتين ثم ليحمد الله، وليثن عليه، ويصلي على النبي أهل بيته ويقول: اللهم إن كان هذا الامر خيرا لي في ديني ودنيائي فيسره لي وأقدره وإن كان غير ذلك فاصرفه عني، قال مرازم: فسألته أي شئ أقرأ فيهما؟ فقال: اقرأ فيهما ما شئت، وإن شئت فاقرأ فيهما ب‍قل هو الله أحد وقل يا أيها الكافرون وقل هو الله أحد تعدل ثلث القرآن

 Ibn Muskan reported that Ibn Abi Ya’fur said: “I heard Abu Abdillah As-Sadiq (a.) by the request for a decision expressing the power of God and His exaltation and His praise and giving blessings (Salawat) to the Prophet. Then he said: “God, I request You, for You are the Knower of the Hidden and of the testimony, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful, You are the Knower of the Hidden. I request a decision from God through His mercy.” When the matter is complicated and you feel fear in it, say it a hundred times and when it is not so, say it three times.” [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah of Al-Amili, vol. 8 page 68 Hadith 13]

وباسناده عن الشيخ الطوسي باسناده عن الحسن بن محبوب، عن أبي أيوب، عن ابن مسكان، عن ابن أبي يعفور قال: سمعت أبا عبد الله عليه السلام يقول في الاستخارة تعظم الله وتمجده وتحمده وتصلي على النبي صلى الله عليه وآله، ثم تقول: اللهم إني أسألك بأنك عالم الغيب والشهادة، الرحمن الرحيم، وأنت عالم للغيوب أستخير الله برحمته، ثم قال: إن كان الامر شديدا تخاف فيه قلت مائة مرة، وإن كان غير ذلك قلته ثلاث مرات
