Question:

Is the leadership of the twelve Imams (a.) according to the followers of the people of the house (a.) a obligatory matter?

Answer:

Muhammad Ibn Ali Ibn Ibn Babawaih As-Saduq writes: “We believe that the one who denies the leadership of the Commander of the Faithful, Ali Ibn Abi Talib and the Imam (a.) after him, is in the position of the one who denies the prophet of all prophets (a.) and we believe that the one who acknowledges the leadership of the Commander of the Faithful, but denies one of the Imams (a.) after him, is in the position of the one who acknowledges all the Prophets (a.), but denies the Prophethood of Muhammad (s.) and Imam Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) said: “Whoever rejects the last of us is like the one who rejects the first of us.” [Al-I’tiqadat Fi Din Al-Imamiyyah, page 104]

قال شيخ الإسلام محمد بن علي بن بابويه الصدوق: واعتقدنا فيمن جحد إمامة أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب والأئمة من بعده – عليهم السلام – أنه بمنزلة من جحد نبوة جميع الأنبياء واعتقادنا فيمن أقر بأمير المؤمنين وأنكر واحدا من بعده من الأئمة أنه بمنزلة من أقر بجميع الأنبياء وأنكر نبوة محمد صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم وقال الصادق عليه السلام: المنكر لآخرنا كالمنكر لأولنا

Yusuf Ibn Ahmad Al-Bahrani writes: “Where is the difference between disbelief in God and His Messenger (s.) and disbelief in the Imams (a.), when it has been proven that leadership is one of the principles of faith, due to the textual signs (in the Qur’an) and the clear and evidentiary reports that do not escape sincere scrutiny.” [Al-Hada’iq-un-Nadirah, Vol. 18 Page 153]

قال شيخ الإسلام يوسف بن أحمد البحراني رضي الله عنه: أي فرق بين من كفر بالله سبحانه وتعالى ورسوله، وبين من كفر بالأئمة – عليهم السلام -؟ مع ثبوت كون الإمامة من أصول الدين بنص الآيات والأخبار الواضحة الدلالة كعين اليقين

Abu Abdillah Al-Mufid writes: “The followers of the Imams (a.) agree that the one who rejects the leadership of one of the Imams (a.) to whom God has made obedience a obligatory duty, is a misguided infidel who deserves the eternal fire.” [Awa’il-ul-Maqalat, page 44]

قال شيخ الإسلام أبو عبد الله المفيد رضي الله عنه: واتفقت الإمامية على أن من أنكر إمامة أحد الأئمة وجحد ما أوجبه الله تعالى من فرض الطاعة فهو كافر ضال مستحق للخلود في النار
