Deniers of the twelfth?

Question:

What is the judgment of those groups who believe in some Imams (a.) but deny others like the twelfth Imam (a.) (e.g. Zaidites & Isma’ilites)?

Answer:

Aban Ibn Taghlib reported that he asked Imam As-Sadiq (a.): “Is the one who recognizes the (previous) Imams but does not recognize the Imam of his time a believer (Mumin)?” He said: “No.” I said: “Is he a Muslim?” He said: “Yes.” [Kamal-ud-Din of As-Saduq, volume 2 page 377 Hadith 3]

حدثنا أبي رضي الله عنه قال: حدثنا سعد بن عبد الله، عن محمد بن عيسى، عن إسماعيل بن مهران، عن محمد بن سعيد، عن أبان بن تغلب قال: قلت لأبي عبد الله عليه السلام: من عرف الأئمة ولم يعرف الامام الذي في زمانه أمؤمن هو؟ قال: لا، قلت: أمسلم هو؟ قال: نعم

Abu Ja’far As-Saduq writes: “Islam is the affirmation of the two confessions and through it the blood and property is protected and the reward is for the faith (Iman). The Prophet (s.) said: “Whoever testifies that no one is worthy of worship except God and that Muhammad is the Messenger of God, his possessions and blood is protected unless there is a legitimate reason for it and his reckoning is incumbent upon God.” [Kamal-ud-Din of As-Saduq, Volume 2, page 377]

قال الشيخ الصدوق رضي الله عنه: الاسلام هو إقرار بالشهادتين، وهو الذي به تحقن الدماء والأموال والثواب على الايمان، وقال النبي صلى الله عليه وآله: من شهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأن محمدا رسول الله فقد حقن ما له ودمه إلا بحقهما وحسابه على الله عز وجل

Ammar reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “He who dies, while having no Imam, dies a death of ignorance, of disbelief and association (shirk) and misguidance.” [Kamal-ud-Din of As-Saduq, volume 2 page 379 Hadith 11]
