First question:

Some innovators claim that there is a donkey in the chain of transmission in Volume 1 of Al Kafi on page 237. Does this claim conform with the reality?

Answer:

The donkey is not in the chain of the transmission (إسناد), but in the content (متن).

Muhammad Ibn Ya’qub reported, that Imam Ali (a.) said: ,,Prophet Muhammad (s.) spoke to the donkey and he said: ﴾My father and mother be sacrificed to you! My father narrated to me about his father, who narrated about his grandfather, that his father was with Noah (a.) on the ark. Then Noah (a.) went to him and stroked his back. Then he said: ,,From the loins of this donkey will come forth a donkey, on which the chief and the seal of the prophets will ride upon.” And praise be to God for making me that donkey.﴿”  Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi writes: ,,Interrupted (Mursal).” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, volume 1 page 237; Mir’at-ul-Uqul of Al-Majlisi, volume 3 page 48]

عن محمد بن يعقوب رحمه الله قال: وروي أن أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام قال: إن ذلك الحمار كلم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله فقال: بأبي أنت وأمي إن أبي حدثني، عن أبيه، عن جده، عن أبيه أنه كان مع نوح في السفينة فقام إليه نوح فمسح على كفله ثم قال: يخرج من صلب هذا الحمار حمار يركبه سيد النبيين وخاتمهم، فالحمد لله الذي جعلني ذلك الحمار

Aban Ibn Uthman reported that Imam Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) said: ,,The first, living being on the earth, who died was his donkey Al-Ya’fur. He died at the hour when the Prophet Muhammad (s.) left this world. He tore his neck band and ran around until he came to the Well of the Sons of Hutamah and he threw himself into it and it became his tomb. Prophet Muhammad (s.) spoke to Al-Ya’fur and he said: ﴾My father and mother be sacrificed to you! My father narrated to me about his father, who narrated about his grandfather that his father was on the ark with Noah (a.). Then one day Noah (a.) looked at him and stroked his face with his hand. Then he said: ﴾From the loins of this donkey will come forth a donkey, on which the chief and the seal of the prophets will ride upon.﴿ Praise be to God, that he made me that donkey.﴿ [Ilal-ush-Shara’i from As-Saduq, Volume 1 Page 167]

حدثنا محمد بن علي ماجيلويه رضي الله عنه قال: حدثنا محمد بن يحيى العطار قال: حدثنا سهل بن زياد الآدمي قال: حدثنا محمد بن الوليد الصيرفي، عن أبان بن عثمان، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام أنه قال:  ان أول شيء مات من الدواب حماره اليعفور توفي ساعة قبض رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله قطع خطامه، ثم مر يركض حتى وافى بئر بنى حطمه بقبا فرمى بنفسه فيها فكانت قبره ثم قال أبو عبد الله عليه السلام: ان يعفور كلم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله فقال: بأبي أنت وأمي ان أبي حدثني عن أبيه عن جده: انه كان مع نوح في السفينة فنظر إليه يوما نوح عليه السلام ومسح يده على وجهه، ثم قال: يخرج من صلب هذا الحمار حمار يركبه سيد النبيين وخاتمهم والحمد لله الذي جعلني ذلك الحمار

Some may wonder how there can be so few fathers among the donkeys or how it can be that a living being lives so long. There are several aspects that can be considered for this.

[1.] Ancestors are called as fathers:

,,I followed the faith of my fathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. We must not associate anything with God. That is something of the benevolence of God to us and to the people. But most people are not grateful.” [Yusuf 12:38]

واتبعت ملة آبائي إبراهيم وإسحاق ويعقوب ما كان لنا أن نشرك بالله من شيء ذلك من فضل الله علينا وعلى الناس ولكن أكثر الناس لا يشكرون

[2.] The lifespans were prolonged:

,,And We sent Noah to his people. He dwelt among them a thousand years minus fifty. Then the flood seized them, while they were doing wrong.” [Al-Ankabut 29:14]

ولقد أرسلنا نوحا إلى قومه فلبث فيهم ألف سنة إلا خمسين عاما فأخذهم الطوفان وهم ظالمون

As for the followers of Umar, they narrate from sixty donkeys.

Abu Nu’aim reported that Mu’adh Ibn Jabal said: ,,Prophet Muhammad (s.) came to a black donkey in Khaibar and said: ﴾Who are you?﴿ The donkey said: ﴾I am Amr, Ibn Fulan. We were of three brothers. Prophets rode on all of us. I am the youngest of them and you are in possession of me. I belonged to one of the Jews and I used to, when I was thinking of you, throw him down, whereupon he beat me.﴿ Prophet Muhammad said: ,,You are Ya’fur!” [Al-Khasa’is-ul-Kubra from Jalal-ud-Din As-Suyuti, Volume 2 Page 100]

وأخرج أبو نعيم عن معاذ بن جبل قال أتى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وهو بخيبر حمار أسود فقال من أنت قال أنا عمرو بن فلان كنا ثلاثة أخوة كلنا ركبنا الأنبياء أنا أصغرهم وكنت لك فملكني رجل من اليهود فكنت إذا ذكرتك كبأت به فيوجعني ضربا فقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أنت يعفور

Abu Abd Ar-Rahman As-Sulami reported that Abu Manzur said: ,,When God made His Prophet (s.) victorious in Khaibar, he received as his share of the spoils of war four sheep, four goats, ten pots of gold and silver and a black and emaciated donkey. The Messenger of God (s.) spoke to him and said: ﴾What is your name?﴿ The donkey said: ﴾Yazid Ibn Shihab. God brought forth from the loins of my grandfather sixty donkeys and only prophets rode on them. None of the descendants of my grandfather remained except me and none of the prophets remained except you and I expect you, to ride on me. Before you I belonged to a Jew, whom I caused to stumble and fall down frequently. Therefore, he used to kick me in my belly and hit my back.﴿ The Messenger of God (s.) said: ﴾I will call you Ya’fur, O Ya’fur.﴿ The donkey said: ﴾I obey you.﴿ Then the Messenger (s.) said: ﴾Do you like the female donkeys? ﴿ Ya’fur said: ﴾No.﴿ Therefore, the Messenger (s.) rode on the donkey to go about his business and when he dismounted from the donkey, he sent him to the house of the person he wanted to visit and Ya’fur knocked on the door with his head. When the householder answered the door, the donkey signaled that the person should go to see the Prophet (s.). When the Messenger (s.) died, the donkey went to a well belonging to Abu l-Haitham ibn Nabahan and threw himself into the well, which became his grave, in grief over the death of the Prophet (s.).” Isma’il Ibn Umar Ibn Kathir writes: ,,Several great scholars rejected it.” [Al-Bidayah Wa An-Nihayah by Ibn Kathir, Volume 6 Page 166 – 167]

فقال أبو محمد بن عبد الله بن حامد: أخبرنا أبو الحسن أحمد بن حمدان السحر كي, حدثنا عمر بن محمد بن بجير, حدثنا أبو جعفر محمد بن يزيد – إملاء -, أنا أبو عبد الله محمد بن عقبة بن أبي الصهباء, حدثنا أبو حذيفة عن عبد الله بن حبيب الهذلي, عن أبي عبد الرحمن السلمي عن أبي منظور قال: لما فتح الله على نبيه صلى الله عليه وسلم خيبر أصابه من سهمه أربعة أزواج بغال وأربعة أزواج خفاف, وعشر اواق ذهب وفضة, وحمار أسود, ومكتل, قال: فكلم النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم الحمار فكلمه الحمار, فقال له: ما اسمك, قال: يزيد بن شهاب, أخرج الله من نسل جدي ستين حمارا كلهم ​​لم يركبهم إلا نبي, لم يبق من نسل جدي غيري, ولا من الانبياء غيرك, وقد كنت أتوقعك أن تركبني, قد كنت قبلك لرجل يهودي, وكنت أعثر به عمدا, وكان يجيع بطني ويضرب ظهري, فقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: سميتك يعفور, يا يعفور, قال: لبيك, قال: تشتهي الاناث؟ قال: لا, فكان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يركبه لحاجته, فإذا نزل عنه بعث به إلى باب الرجل فيأتي الباب فيقرعه برأسه فإذا خرج إليه صاحب الدار أومأ إليه أن أجب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم, فلما قبض النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم جاء إلى بئر كان لابي الهيثم بن النبهان فتردى فيها فصارت قبره جزعا منه على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم. قال إسماعيل بن عمر بن كثير: حديث الحمار وقد أنكره غير واحد من الحفاظ الكبار

Husain reported that Amr Ibn Maimun said: ,,At the time of ignorance, I saw a female monkey around whom other monkeys were gathered. It committed fornication and so they stoned it and I also stoned it along with them.” [Sahih-ul-Bukhari, Hadith 3636]

حدثنا نعيم بن حماد حدثنا هشيم عن حصين عن عمرو بن ميمون قال: رأيت في الجاهلية قردة اجتمع عليها قردة قد زنت فرجموها فرجمتها معهم

Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: ,,A shepherd was in the midst of his sheep when a wolf ran to him and took a sheep from them. When the shepherd demanded it, the wolf turned to him and said: ﴾Who will it have on the day of the predators? On the day, when it will have no shepherd but me?﴿ As a man rode a cow, with a burden loaded on it, it turned to him and said to him:﴾I was not created for this. Rather, I was created for plowing the field.﴿” The people said: ,,Praise be to God.” The Messenger (s.) of God said: ,,I believe in it and so do Abu Bakr and Umar.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 3463]

حدثنا أبو اليمان أخبرنا شعيب عن الزهري قال أخبرني أبو سلمة بن عبد الرحمن بن عوف أن أبا هريرة رضي الله عنه قال سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: بينما راع في غنمه عدا عليه الذئب فأخذ منها شاة فطلبه الراعي فالتفت إليه الذئب فقال من لها يوم السبع يوم ليس لها راع غيري وبينما رجل يسوق بقرة قد حمل عليها فالتفتت إليه فكلمته فقالت إني لم أخلق لهذا ولكني خلقت للحرث قال الناس سبحان الله قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فإني أومن بذلك وأبو بكر وعمر
