Question:

What is meant by the verse: “When the angels said: O Mary, God has chosen you and made you pure and He has chosen you over the women of the worlds.” [Al Imran 3:42]

وإذ قالت الملائكة يا مريم إن الله اصطفاك وطهرك واصطفاك على نساء العالمين

Answer:

Fadl Ibn Hasan reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: “This is meant over the women of the worlds of your time, for Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger (s.), is the mistress over the women of all the worlds.” [Majma’-ul-Bayan by Abu Ali At-Tabarsi, Volume 2 Page 290]

عن فضل بن حسن عن أبي جعفر الباقر عليه السلام أنه قال: أي على نساء عالمي زمانك, لأن فاطمة بنت رسول الله, صلى الله عليها, وعلى أبيها, وبعلها وبنيها, سيدة نساء العالمين

Sulaim Ibn Qais reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “Fatimah (a.) is a part of the Messenger (s.), although she is under my authority. In her time she is like Mary, the daughter of Imran, at her own time.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 39 page 353 Hadith 26]

عن أبان بن أبي عياش عن سليم بن قيس عن الإمام علي عليه السلام قال: وهذه فاطمة صلوات الله عليها بضعة من رسول الله تحتي، هي في زمانها كمريم بنت عمران في زمانها

Al-Mufaddal Ibn Umar reported that he spoke to Imam As-Sadiq (a.): “Tell me about the statement of the Messenger (s.) that Fatimah is the Lady of the Women of the Worlds. Is she the mistress of the women of her world?” He said: “This is reserved for Mary. She was the Mistress of the women of her world, but Fatimah is the Mistress of the women of all worlds from the first to the last.” [Ma’ani Al-Akhbar of As-Saduq, page 107]

حدثنا أحمد بن زياد بن جعفر الهمداني – رحمه الله – قال: حدثنا علي بن إبراهيم بن هاشم, عن أبيه, عن محمد بن سنان, عن المفضل بن عمر قال: قلت لأبي عبد الله عليه السلام: أخبرني عن قول رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله في فاطمة: أنها سيدة نساء العالمين أهي سيدة نساء عالمها؟ فقال: ذاك لمريم كانت سيدة نساء عالمها, وفاطمة سيدة نساء العالمين من الأولين والآخرين

Abdullah Ibn Abbas reported that people spoke to the Prophet Muhammad (s.): “O Messenger of God, is Fatimah the Mistress of the women of her world?” He said: “This is reserved for Mary, the daughter of Imran. But as for my daughter Fatimah, she is the Mistress of the women of all worlds from the first to the last. At the time of her fight she will rise up, so that 70,000 Godly angels will greet her with the greeting of peace and call out to her what was called to Mary by the angels and they will say: “O Fatimah, God has chosen you and made you pure and He has chosen you over the women of the worlds.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 43 page 24 Hadith 20]

أمالي الصدوق: الهمداني، عن علي بن إبراهيم، عن جعفر بن سلمة الأهوازي عن إبراهيم بن محمد الثقفي، عن إبراهيم بن موسى، عن أبي قتادة، عن عبد الرحمن ابن علاء الحضرمي، عن سعيد بن المسيب، عن ابن عباس عن النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم قال فقيل يا رسول الله أهي سيدة نساء عالمها؟ فقال صلى الله عليه وآله: ذاك لمريم بنت عمران، فأما ابنتي فاطمة فهي سيدة نساء العالمين من الأولين والآخرين وإنها لتقوم في محرابها فيسلم عليها سبعون ألف ملك من الملائكة المقربين وينادونها بما نادت به الملائكة مريم فيقولون: يا فاطمة إن الله اصطفاك وطهرك واصطفاك على نساء العالمين

Muhammad Ibn Al-Husain reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “To us belongs the best woman of the worlds (Fatimah) and to you belongs the bearer of the firewood (Umm Jamil).” [Kanz-ud-Daqa’iq of Al-Mirza Al-Mashhadi, Volume 2 page 85]

عن محمد بن الحسين عن الإمام علي عليه السلام أنه قال: ومنا خير نساء العالمين، ومنكم حمالة الحطب
