Question:

Did the Messenger (s.) love fasting on both days (Mustahab)?

Answer:

Ali Ibn Musa reported that Muhammad Ibn Imran said:  “The Prophet Muhammad (s.) used to fast on Monday and Thursday, after which he was asked: “Why is this so?” He said: “The deeds rise up every Monday and Thursday. Therefore, I love that my deeds rise up while I fast.” Ali Ibn Al-Husain reported that Imam Ar-Rida (a.) said: ” The fasting on Monday is available as a choice to those who wish to fast in it. If he wants to, he fasts and if he wants to, he breaks it.”  [Mustadrak-ul-Wasa’il by Al-Mirza An-Nuri, Volume 7 page 526]

عن علي بن موسى عن محمد بن عمران قال: كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله يصوم الاثنين والخميس، فقيل له صلى الله عليه وآله: لم ذلك؟ فقال: إن الاعمال ترفع كل اثنين وخميس، فأحب أن يرفع عملي وانا صائم وعن علي بن الحسين عن الإمام الرضا عليه السلام قال: إن صوم يوم الاثنين، من الصوم الذي صاحبه فيه بالخيار، إن شاء صام، وإن شاء افطر
