Question:

Who is meant by the term “Bakriyyah” (بكرية)?

Answer:

The word “Bakriyyah” (بكرية) or also “Bakri” (بكري) refers to all those who belong to the followers of Abu Bakr.

Abu Ja’far As-Saduq writes: “The followers of Abu Bakr (Bakriyyah) and the followers of Abdullah Ibn Ibad (Ibadiyyah) claim that the Prophet (s.) chose Abu Bakr.” [Kamal-ud-Din, page 104]

قال الشيخ الصدوق رحمه الله: قد ادعت البكرية والاباضية أن النبي صلى الله عليه وآله نص على أبي بكر

Abu Abdillah Al-Mufid writes: “We know neither a follower of Abu Bakr (Bakri), nor a follower of Uthman (Uthmani), nor a departing one (Khariji) who gives up the consensus of the arguing people for the acceptance of what we report and enumerate in terms of the merits of the commander of the believers (a.). How can they only reject the traditions about it, while reporting it themselves?” [Al-Ifsah, page 37]

قال الشيخ المفيد رحمه الله: أنا لا نعلم بكريا ولا عثمانيا ولا خارجيا دفع إجماع المختلفين على تسليم ما رويناه من فضائل أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام وعددناه، وكيف ينكرون رواية ذلك وهم أنفسهم قد رووه

Abu Muhammad Al-Amili writes: “The followers of Abu Bakr (Bakriyyah) say that Ali did not accept Islam out of insight and knowledge, but by instruction, and therefore his acceptance of Islam is not equal to that of adults.” [As-Sirat-ul-Mustaqim, Volume 1 Page 237]

قال زين الدين أبو محمد العاملي: قالت البكرية إسلام علي لا على النظر والمعرفة، بل على وجه التلقين فليس كإسلام البالغين

 

Abu Ja’far At-Tabari writes: “The followers of Abu Bakr (Bakriyyah) claim that Ali (a.) accepted the Islam of a little boy which is not equal to the Islam of a conscientious, convinced and knowledgeable man.” [Al-Mustarshid, pages 479-480]

قال أبو جعفر الطبري الإمامي رحمه الله: زعمت البكرية أن إسلام علي عليه السلام إسلام الصبيان ليس كإسلام المعتقد العارف المميز

Abu Al-Fath Al-Karajiki writes: “As for the ninth explanation of the errors of the followers of Abu Bakr (Bakriyyah), it is astonishing from them, and their error is obvious, that they claim that the Messenger (s.) appointed Abu Bakr as the prayer leader for the people, whereupon they claim that there is a proof in it for the legitimacy of his general leadership over all the inhabitants of the earth according to the Prophet (s.).”[At-Ta’ajjub, page 76]
