Question:

What is Abu Hanifah’s position among the people of (a.)?

Answer:

Ahmad Ibn Abdillah reported that Isa Ibn Abdillah said: “When Abu Hanifah came in to Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.), he said to him: “O Abu Hanifah, it has come to my attention that you are applying the comparative conclusion (qiyas)?” He said: “Yes.” Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) said: “Do not apply the Qiyas, for the first one to apply it was Iblis when he said: ” You created me out of fire, but you created him out of clay. Thus he drew a comparative conclusion (qiyas) between fire and clay, and if he had compared the descendants of Adam (a.) with the illumination of the lights, he would have recognized the advantage between the two lights and the clarity of one over the other.” Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi writes: “Authentic (Sahih).” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 1 Page 58 Hadith 20; Mir’at-ul-Uqul of Al-Majlisi, Volume 1 Page 201]

Muhammad Ibn Muhammad reported that Muhammad Ibn Ali said: “When Abu Hanifah and Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) were eating together, he raised his hand from eating and said: “Praise be to God, the Lord of the Worlds. God, this is from you and from your messenger.” Abu Hanifah said: “O Abu Abdillah, are you joining other gods with God?” Then he said to him: “Woe to you! God says in His Book: “And nothing made them resent but that it was God and His Messenger, who made them rich from His bounty.” (9:74) And He says in another place: “If only they were content with what God and His messenger gave them, and said, God is enough for us. God will send us some of His grace, and His Messenger as well.” (9:59) Abu Hanifah said: “By God, it seems to me that I have never read either of these things in the Book of God before.” Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) said: “Yes, you have read and heard both, but because of you and those who resemble you, God sent down the verse: “Do they not consider the Qur’an carefully? Or are there locks on their hearts?” (47:24) And He said: “No, but that which they used to acquire has become like rust upon their hearts.” (83:14) [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, volume 47 page 240 Hadith 25].

Muhammad Ibn Hakim reported that Imam Al-Kazim (a.) said: “May God curse Abu Hanifah! He used to say: “Ali said this, but I say that.” Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi writes: “Good (Hasan).” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 1 Page 56 Hadith 9: Mir’at-ul-Uqul of Al-Majlisi, Volume 1 Page 193]
