Question:

Shall only the most knowledgeable (a) call the people to his leadership?

Answer:

Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: ,,Beware of the ignorant from among the worshippers and the wicked from among the knowledgeable (ulama), for they are a temptation (Fitnah), for anyone who has been tempted.” Hadi An-Najafi writes: ,,The tradition is impeccable as far as the chain is concerned.” [Mawsu’at Ahadith Ahl Al-Bait, Volume 7 Page 260 Hadith 4]

الحميري، عن هارون، عن مسعدة بن صدقة، عن جعفر عليه السلام عن أبيه محمد ابن علي عليه السلام قال: إياكم والجهال من المتعبدين والفجار من العلماء فإنهم فتنة كل مفتون قال هادي النجفي: الرواية من حيث السند لا بأس بها

Muhammad Al-Ukbari reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: ,,Whoever acquires the knowledge, in order to discuss with the fools or or to boast about it among the knowledgeable,  or to thereby invite the people to himself, while saying: ,,I am your leader.” Let him take his place in the fire! Leadership belongs to no one but to its people, but he who calls the people to himself, while among them dwells one who is more knowledgeable than him, God will not even look at him on the Day of Resurrection.” [Al-Fusul-ul-Muhimmah of Al-Hurr Al-Amili, Volume 1 Page 610 Hadith 9]

عن محمد العكبري عن الرسول صلى الله عليه وآله قال: من تعلم علما ليماري به السفهاء أو يباهي به العلماء أو يصرف به الناس إلى نفسه يقول أنا رئيسكم فليتبوأ مقعده من النار إن الرياسة لا تصلح إلا لأهلها فمن دعا الناس إلى نفسه وفيهم من هو أعلم منه لم ينظر الله إليه يوم القيامة

Ali Ibn Al-Husain reported that Imam Ar-Rida (a.) said: ,,He who calls people to himself, while among them there is one who is more knowledgeable than him, is a misguided innovator.” [Fiqh-ur-Rida by Al-Qummi, pages 382-383]

عن علي بن الحسين عن الإمام الرضا عليه السلام قال: من دعا الناس إلى نفسه وفيهم من هو أعلم منه فهو مبتدع ضال

Al-Fudail Ibn Yasar reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: ,,He who goes out and calls the people (to himself), while among them dwells someone who is better than him, is a misguided innovator and he who claims the leadership, while not being an leader (imam), is an disbeliever.” [Mustadrak-ul-Wasa’il of An-Namazi, Volume 11 page 29 Hadith 1]

عن الفضيل بن يسار عن الإمام الصادق عليه السلام قال: من خرج يدعو الناس وفيهم من هو أفضل منه فهو ضال مبتدع ومن ادعى الإمامة وليس بإمام فهو كافر

Al-Hasan Ibn Ali reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: ,,He who calls people to himself, while among them is he who is more knowledgeable than him, is a misguided innovator.” [Tuhaf-ul-Uqul of Al-Harrani, page 375]

عن الحسن بن علي عن الإمام الصادق عليه السلام قال: من دعا الناس إلى نفسه وفيهم من هو أعلم منه فهو مبتدع ضال

Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: ,,He who strikes people with his sword and calls them to himself, while among the Muslims there is someone, who is more knowledgeable than him, is a misguided deceiver.” He said this to Umar Ibn Ubaid when he asked him to take the oath of allegiance to Abdullah Ibn Al-Hasan.” [Tafsir Al-Ayyashi, Volume 2 Page 85 Hadith 40]

عن عبد الله بن عتبة عن جعفر بن محمد عن محمد بن علي عليهم السلام قال: من ضرب الناس بسيفه ودعاهم إلى نفسه وفى المسلمين من هو أعلم منه فهو ضال متكلف قاله لعمر بن عبيد حيث سأله أن يبايع عبد الله بن الحسن

Al-Mufaddal Ibn Umar reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: ,,O Mufaddal, every oath of allegiance before the appearance of the rising one (Qa’im) is an oath of allegiance of disbelief, hypocrisy and betrayal. May God curse the one who takes the oath of allegiance and the one who receives the oath of allegiance!” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 53 page 8]

عن محمد بن محمد عن بعض أصحابه عن الحسين بن حمدان عن محمد ابن إسماعيل وعلي بن عبد الله الحسني عن أبي شعيب ومحمد بن نصيرعن عمر بن الفرات عن محمد بن المفضل عن المفضل بن عمر عن جعفر بن محمد الصادق عليهما السلام قال:  يا مفضل كل بيعة قبل ظهور القائم عليه السلام فبيعته كفر ونفاق وخديعة، لعن الله المبايع لها والمبايع له
