Question:

What are the characteristics of a hypocrite (Munafiq)?

Answer:

Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “He who has three characteristics is a hypocrite, even if he fasts and prays and boasts of being a Muslim: “If you entrust yourself to him, then he betrays you, if he talks, then he lies, and if he promises, he does not keep his promises. The sublime one says in His book: “God does not love the betrayers.” (8:58) And: “May God’s curse be on him if he is among the liars!” (24:7) And: ” Remember in the Book of Ishmael, for he was true in his promises and a messenger and prophet.” (19:54) [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 2 Page 290 – 291 Hadith 8]

عدة من أصحابنا، عن سهل بن زياد، عن بعض أصحابه، عن عبد الله بن سنان، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله: ثلاث من كن فيه كان منافقا وإن صام وصلى وزعم أنه مسلم: من إذا ائتمن خان وإذا حدث كذب وإذا وعد أخلف، إن الله عز وجل قال: في كتابه: إن الله لا يحب الخائنين وقال أن لعنة الله عليه إن كان من الكاذبين وفي قوله عز وجل: واذكر في الكتاب إسماعيل إنه كان صادق الوعد وكان رسول نبيا

Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “Whoever has four characteristics is a hypocrite and whoever has one of them has the behaviour of a hypocrite until he stops: “If he talks, he lies, if he promises, he does not stick to it, if he agrees to something, he cheats, and if he argues, he becomes abusive.” [Al-Khisal of As-Saduq, page 254 Hadith 129]

Muhammad Al-Ukbari reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “Hypocrisy has four characteristics: The hardness of the heart, laziness of the eye, the persistence of sin, and the desire for the worldly.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 69 page 176 Hadith 4]

عن محمد العكبري عن الإمام الصادق عليه السلام قال: أربع من علامات النفاق قساوة القلب، وجمود العين، والإصرار على الذنب، والحرص على الدنيا

Comment:

According to Imam Al-Baqir (a.), persistence in sin is when one sins and does not ask for forgiveness and does not speak of repentance. This can be read in the 11th volume of “Mustadrak-ul-Wasa’il” on page 367.

Similar characteristics are mentioned by the followers of Umar.

Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “The signs of a hypocrite are three: If he speaks, he lies; if he promises, he does not keep his promises; and if you entrust yourself to him, he betrays you.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 33]
