Question:

Is dancing according to Islam a desirable thing?

Answer:

Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “I forbid you to dance and the oboe and the drums.” Hadi An-Najafi writes: “The tradition is authentic according to the chain (Mu’tabar).” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, volume 6 page 432 Hadith 7; Mawsu’at-ul-Ahadith of An-Najafi, volume 10 page 77 Hadith 4]

علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه عن النوفلي عن السكوني عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله: أنهاكم عن الزفن والمزمار وعن الكوبات والكبرات قال هادي النجفي: الرواية معتبرة الإسناد

Nu’man Ibn Muhammad reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “I forbid my community to dance and play the oboe and the drums.” [Da’a’im-ul-Islam of Al-Maghribi, Volume 2 Page 207 Hadith 754]

عن نعمان بن محمد عن النبي صلى الله عليه وآله قال: أنهى أمتي عن الزفن والمزمار وعن الكوبات والكنارات

Husain Ibn Muhammad reported that Ibn Abi Jumhur said: “The Messenger (s.) forbade the beating of the tambourine (daff) and the dancing and all the playing from it and being present and listening to it. He also did not allow the beating of the tambourine except at the time of marriage and copulation, on the condition, that it is done for an virgin one and the men do not come in to the women.” [Al-Mustadrak of An-Nuri, Volume 13 page 218 Hadith 14]

عن حسين بن محمد عن ابن أبي جمهور عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله أنه نهى عن الضرب بالدف والرقص وعن اللعب كله وعن حضوره، وعن الاستماع إليه ولم يجز ضرب الدف إلا في الاملاك والدخول، بشرط أن يكون في البكر، ولا يدخل الرجال عليهن

Some scholars claim that the dancing of women among themselves or in front of their husbands is a good thing, but they do not provide any evidence for this.
