Question:

According to Islam, is it allowed to love people of other religions?

Answer:

Al-Ala’ Ibn Fadl reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “Whoever loved an disbeliever has already hated God and whoever hated an disbeliever has already loved God. The friend of an enemy of God is an enemy of God.” [Mustadrak-ul-Wasa’il by Al-Mirza An-Nuri, Volume 12 page 236 Hadith 13]

الشيخ المفيد في أماليه: عن محمد بن الحسن بن الوليد عن أحمد ابن إدريس, عن جعفر الفزاري, عن محمد بن الحسين بن زيد, عن محمد بن سنان, عن العلاء بن الفضل, عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام, قال: من أحب كافرا فقد أبغض الله, ومن أبغض كافرا فقد أحب الله, ثم قال: صديق عدو الله عدو لله

Abu Ja’far reported that Imam Ar-Rida (a.) said: “He who loved his fellow people, is not to be condemned, even if they were disbelievers.” I said to him: “But God says: “You will not find people who believe in God and the Last Day, while they love him who has defied God and His Messenger.” (58:22) He said: “It is not that, of what you assume, that he hates him because of God and does not love him and eats from him and no one else from the people nourishes him.” [Mustatrafat-us-Sara’ir of Al-Hilli, page 576]

عن محمد بن إدريس عن أبي جعفر عن أبي الحسن عليه السلام قال لا لوم على من أحب قومه وإن كانوا كفارا، فقلت له يقول الله لا تجد قوما يؤمنون بالله واليوم الآخر يوادون من حاد الله ورسوله الآية فقال ليس حيث تذهب أنه يبغضه في الله ولا يوده ويأكله ولا يطعمه غيره من الناس

Ali Ibn Suwaid reported that Imam Al-Kazim (a.) said: “Hold on to the handle of the religion, to the family of Muhammad (s.) and to the firm handle, to one representative (Wasi) after the other and to submit to them and to be satisfied with what they say and do not attach yourself to the religion of those who are not amongst your followers and do not love their religion!” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 8 Page 124 – 125 Hadith 95]

عدة من أصحابنا، عن سهل بن زياد، عن إسماعيل بن مهران، عن محمد بن منصور الخزاعي، عن علي بن سويد، ومحمد بن يحيى، عن محمد بن الحسين عن محمد بن إسماعيل بن بزيع، عن عمه حمزة بن بزيع، عن علي بن سويد، والحسن بن محمد، عن محمد بن أحمد النهدي، عن إسماعيل بن مهران، عن محمد بن منصور، عن علي بن سويد عن موس بن جعفر الكاظم عليهما السلام قال: فاستمسك بعروة الدين، آل محمد والعروة الوثقى الوصي بعد الوصي والمسالمة لهم والرضا بما قالوا ولا تلتمس دين من ليس من شيعتك ولا تحبن دينهم

Al-Fadl Ibn Al-Hasan At-Tabarsi writes:

نهى الله سبحانه المؤمنين عن موالاة الكافرين، وإن كانوا في النسب الأقربين، فقال: يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تتخذوا آباءكم وإخوانكم أولياء وهذا في أمر الدين، فأما في أمر الدنيا فلا بأس بمجالستهم ومعاشرتهم، لقوله سبحانه: وصاحبهما في الدنيا معروفا

“Allah forbade the believers to be close to the disbelievers, even if they are their closest relatives, for He said: “O you who believe! do not take your fathers and brothers to be close to you if they love disbelief more than faith.” (9:23) This refers to the religious realm, and as for the worldly realm, there is no problem to sit with them and go into their company, for God says: “If they urge you to associate with me, of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them and join them in the worldly in a right way.” (31:15) [Majma’-ul-Bayan, Volume 5 page 30]
