What types of judges are there in Islam?

Muhammad Ibn Khalid reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “The judges are four. Three are in the fire and one is in paradise: A man who judges in injustice while unaware of it, so that he ends up in the fire, a man who judges in injustice while knowing that he is judging in injustice, so that he ends up in the fire, a man who judges justly while unaware of it, so that he ends up in the fire, and a man who judges justly while knowing about it, so that he enters Paradise.” He said: “The judgments are two: the judgment of God and the judgment of ignorance. Whoever neglects the judgment of God is judged by ignorance.” [Tahdhib-ul-Ahkam of At-Tusi, Volume 6 page 218]

أحمد بن محمد بن خالد عن أبيه رفعه عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: القضاة أربعة ثلاثة في النار وواحد في الجنة، رجل قضى بجور وهو يعلم فهو في النار، ورجل قضى بجور وهو لا يعلم أنه قضى بالجور فهو في النار، ورجل قضى بالحق وهو لا يعلم فهو في النار، ورجل قضى بالحق وهو يعلم فهو في الجنة، وقال عليه السلام: الحكم حكمان حكم الله عز وجل وحكم الجاهلية فمن أخطأ حكم الله حكم بحكم الجاهلية

Aban reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “The judges are three: two of them are perished and one is saved. As for those who perished, it is an unjust man who deliberately acts unjustly and an striver (Mujtahid) who is beside him, and as for those who are saved, it is he who obeys what God has commanded him.” [Mustadrak-ul-Wasa’il of An-Nuri, Volume 17 page 147]

عن عمر بن أذينة عن أبيه عن أبي القاسم العبدي عن أبان عن الإمام علي عليه السلام قال: القضاة ثلاثة هالكان وناج فأما الهالكان فجائر جار متعمدا ومجتهد أخطأ والناجي من عمل بما أمره الله به

Abu Dharr reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “The Imams after me are twelve. Nine are from the loins of Al-Husain (a.). The ninth of them is their Rising one (Qa’im). Their likeness to you is the likeness of the Ark of Noah. Whoever enters it will be saved and whoever stays away from it will go down, and their parable is that of the gate of forgiveness for the Children of Israel.” [Kifayat-ul-Athar of Al-Khazzaz, pages 38 – 39]
