Answer:

Hammad Ibn Isa reported that a man said to Imam Al-Kazim (a.): “May my life be sacrificed to you, i am sitting with a group of people who are playing chess, whereby i do not play but watch.” He said: “What have you to do with (such) a meeting? God does not look at your people!” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 6 Page 437]

علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن حماد بن عيسى قال: دخل رجل من البصريين على أبي الحسن الأول عليه السلام فقال له: جعلت فداك إني أقعد مع قوم يلعبون بالشطرنج ولست ألعب بها ولكن أنظر فقال: مالك ولمجلس لا ينظر الله إلى أهله

Mas’adah Ibn Ziyad reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) was asked: “What is the meaning of chess?” He said: “Leave Zoroastrianism to its followers, May God curse them!” [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah by Al-Hurr Al-Amili, Volume 17 page 319]

وعن علي بن إبراهيم, عن هارون بن مسلم, عن مسعدة ابن زياد عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام أنه سئل عن الشطرنج, فقال: دعوا المجوسية لاهلها لعنها الله

Ibn Ri’ab reported that he said to Imam As-Sadiq (a.): ” May my life be sacrificed to you, what do you say about chess?” He said: “He that turns towards it is like him that turns towards the pork.” I said: “What is the obligation of him who turns towards the pork?” He said: “He washes his hand.” [Al-Hada’iq-un-Nadirah of Al-Bahrani, Volume 18 page 189]

وعن ابن رئاب قال: دخلت على أبي عبد الله عليه السلام، فقلت له: جعلت فداك، ما تقول في الشطرنج؟ فقال: المقلب لها كالمقلب للحم الخنزير قال: فقلت: ما على من قلب لحم الخنزير؟ قال: يغسل يده

Sulaiman Al-Ja’fari reported that Imam Ar-Rida (a.) said: “He who pays attention to chess is like he who pays attention to the hellfire.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 6 Page 437]

سهل بن زياد، عن علي بن سعيد، عن سليمان الجعفري، عن أبي الحسن الرضا عليه السلام قال: المطلع في الشطرنج كالمطلع في النار

Abu Basir reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “Selling chess is forbidden (haram) and eating of its price is forbidden and using it is disbelief (kufr) and playing with it is association (shirk) and the greeting of peace to those who play with it is a transgression (ma’siyah) and great offence and someone who puts his hand on it is like someone who puts his hand on pork. He has no prayer until he washes his hand like the one who washes it, as the one who touches pork and the one who watches him is like the one who looks at the shame of his own mother and the players of it and the spectator of it are in that state as long as it lasts and the greeting of peace to those who play with it is equal to sin in that state. The one who sits down to play with it has already taken his place in the hellfire and his sustenance from it is that he is sorrowful on the resurrection and woe unto you for sitting down with those who are deceived by it with their play, for it is one of those sessions whose relatives incur the wrath of God. They have to expect him at every moment, so that you too will be counted among them.” [Mawsu’at Ahadith Ahl Al-Bait of An-Najafi, Volume 5 page 343]

ابن إدريس نقلا من جامع البزنطي، عن أبي بصير، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: بيع الشطرنج حرام وأكل ثمنه سحت واتخاذها كفر واللعب بها شرك والسلام على اللاهي بها معصية وكبيرة موبقة والخائض يده فيها كالخائض يده في لحم الخنزير لا صلاة له حتى يغسل يده كما يغسلها من مس لحم الخنزير والناظر إليها كالناظر في فرج أمه واللاهي بها والناظر إليها في حال ما يلهى بها والسلام على اللاهي بها في حالته تلك في الاثم سواء ومن جلس على اللعب بها فقد تبوء مقعده في النار وكان عيشه ذلك حسرة عليه في القيامة وإياك ومجالسة اللاهي المغرور بلعبها فانه من المجالس التي باء أهلها بسخط من الله يتوقعونه في كل ساعة فيعمك معهم

Ali Ibn Al-Husain reported that Imam Ar-Rida (a.) said: “Know that God have mercy on you, that the Blessed and Exalted One forbade all gambling and ordered the servants to avoid it, for He called it a blemish and said: “It is a blemish from the work of Satan, so avoid it!” (5:90) Like playing chess and backgammon and other games of luck except those two and backgammon is worse than chess. As far as chess is concerned, the one who used it has fallen into disbelief (kufr) towards God, and playing with it is association (shirk). The backgammon player is like someone who eats pork and someone who plays a game of luck other than that is like someone who dyes his hand in blood and pork and someone who plays with something like that is like someone who persists in a forbidden shame and beware of playing with rings and the fourteen and any game of luck, even children playing with nuts, almonds and with dice.” [Mustadrak Safinat Al-Bihar of An-Namazi, Volume 10 Page 25 – 26]

عن علي بن محمد عن علي بن الحسين عن الإمام الرضا عليه السلام قال: اعلم رحمك الله أن الله تبارك وتعالى قد نهى عن جميع القمار وأمر العباد بالاجتناب منها وسماها رجسا، فقال: رجس من عمل الشيطان فاجتنبوه مثل اللعب بالشطرنج والنرد وغيرهما من القمار، والنرد أشر من الشطرنج. فأما الشطرنج فإن اتخاذها كفر بالله العظيم واللعب بها شرك – إلى أن قال: – واللاعب بالنرد كمثل الذي يأكل لحم الخنزير. ومثل الذي يلعب بها من غير قمار مثل الذي يصبغ يده في الدم ولحم الخنزير. ومثل الذي يلعب في شئ من هذه الأشياء كمثل الذي مصر على الفرج الحرام. واتق اللعب بالخواتيم والأربعة عشر، وكل قمار حتى لعب الصبيان بالجوز واللوز والكعاب
