Question:

Is anyone who doubts the disbelief of Abu Bakr and Umar a believer?

Answer:

Muhammad Ibn Ali reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “He who doubts the disbelief of our enemies and oppressors is an disbeliever.” [Al-I’tiqadat of As-Saduq, page 104]

عن محمد بن علي عن أبي عبد الله الصادق عليه السلام أنه قال: من شك في كفر أعدائنا الظالمين لنا فهو كافر

Taqi Ibn Najm reported that Hajar Al-Bajali said: “I had doubts about the two men. So i went to Medina and heard Muhammad Al-Baqir (a.) who said: “The first ones who oppressed us, deprived us of our rights and sent people after us were Abu Bakr and Umar.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 30 page 383]

عن محمد بن محمد عن تقي بن نجم عن حجر البجلي قال: شككت في أمر الرجلين، فأتيت المدينة فسمعت أبا جعفر عليه السلام يقول إن أول من ظلمنا وذهب بحقنا وحمل الناس على رقابنا أبو بكر وعمر

Abu Ali Al-Khurasani reported that the servant of Imam Zain-ul-Abidin (a.) said: “I met secretly with Ali Ibn Husain (a.) and said: ‘Do i not have the right with you that you tell me about the two men, Abu Bakr and Umar?” He said: “They are both disbelievers, and he who loves them is an disbeliever.” [Taqrib-ul-Ma’arif by Abu Salah Al-Halabi, page 244]

عن تقي بن نجم عن أبي علي الخراساني عن مولى لعلي بن الحسين عليهما السلام قال: كنت مع علي بن الحسين عليهما السلام في بعض خلواته فقلت: إن لي عليك حقا ألا تخبرني عن هذين الرجلين، عن أبي بكر وعمر؟ فقال: كافران كافر من أحبهما

Comment:

Even though loving Abu Bakr and Umar is disbelief, this does not make the Sunni muslims disbelievers per se. According to the Imams of Ahlulbayt (as) there is a Zahir and a Batin. Those who confess and believe in Allah and Prophet Muhammad are considered as outward Muslims (zahir) but their batin is left to Allah swt to decide. According to the Imams majority of them are amongst the “weak ones” and not disbelievers and have a chance to enter paradise. Only those who realize the truth behind the enemies of Ahlulbayt (as) and still love them and support them out of arrogance and denial, they are the nawasib whom the imams (as) have condemned.
