Hamzah Ibn At-Tayyar reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said:“Write down!” He then dictated to me: “God argues with what He has given to the servants and what He has made them recognize. Then He sent them a messenger (s.) and sent down to them the Book, that He might command and forbid them therein. In it He commanded prayer and fasting, whereupon the Messenger (s.) slept through the prayer, and Allah said: “I will make you sleep and i will wake you up. So when you get up, perform the prayer, so that they may know how to behave when this happens to them!” It is not as they say: “He who slept through it, fell into destruction.” It’s the same with fasting: “I will make you sick and i will make you well. So if I healed you, then make up for it!” Abu Abdillah As-Sadiq (a.) said: “It is exactly the same when you have looked at all things. You found no one in a confinement and you found no one but that God has the proof against him and that God has the will for him and I do not say: “What they wanted, they did.”Then he said: “God guides and makes you get lost.” And he said: “They have been commanded nothing but what is below their ability, and everything they are not capable of, they are excused from that, but there is nothing good in men.” Then he read: “Neither for the weak nor for the sick, nor for those who have nothing to spend, there is any need for distress, for they have been excused by it. Those who do good are not burdened by any way, and God is forgiving, merciful, and neither are those who came to you for transportation.” (9:41-42) He said: “For they were excused by it because they found nothing.” Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi writes: “Good (Hasan), trustworthy (Muwaththaq).” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, volume 1 page 95 Hadith 4; Mir’at-ul-Uqul of Al-Majlisi, volume 2 page 236 Hadith 4]

Muhammad Al-Baqir (a.) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “When the time of the obligatory prayer arrives, there is no additional prayer until one begins with the obligatory one.” Zurarah said: “I went to Kufa and told Al-Hakam Ibn Utaibah and his companions about the tradition, whereupon they accepted it from me. When i met Abu Ja’far Al-Baqir (a.), he told me that the Messenger (s.) had stopped on some of his journeys and said: “Who is watching over us?” Whereupon Bilal said: “me.” But Bilal and they slept until the sun came up. So the prophet said: “O Bilal, what made you rest?” He said: “O Messenger of God, He who took your soul took my soul.” The messenger (s.) said: “Rise up and move away from your places where you have been inattentive. O Bilal, call for the prayer!” So he called to the prayer and the Messenger (s.) made the two bows for the morning prayer and ordered his companions to do it, whereupon they made the two bows for the morning prayer. Then he stood up and prayed the morning prayer with them, saying: “If anyone forgets any of the prayer, let him perform the prayer as soon as he becomes aware of it, for God said: “Perform the prayer in My remembrance!” (20:14) Zurarah said: “I brought the tradition to Al-Hakam and his companions, whereupon they said: “You have contradicted your previous tradition.” So i went to Abu Ja’far Al-Baqir (a.) and told him about what the people were saying, whereupon he said: “O Zurarah, did you not tell them that all the two times had already passed and that this was a repeat of the Messenger (s.)?” Al-Hurr Al-Amili writes: “Authentic (Sahih) according to its chain of transmission.” [Dhikra Ash-Shi’ah of Shams-ud-Din Al-Amili, Volume 2 page 322; Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah of Al-Hurr Al-Amili, Volume 4 page 285 Hadith 6]

Sama’ah Ibn Mihran reported that he asked the Imam (a.): “What is the situation with a man who forgot to say the morning prayer until the sun had risen?” He said: “He performs the prayer at the time when he becomes aware of it. The messenger (s.) rested during the time of the morning prayer until the sun rose. Then he established the prayer when he woke up, but he moved away from the place where this happened. Then he performed the prayer.” Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi writes: “Trustworthy (Muwaththaq).” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, volume 3 page 165 Hadith 8; Mir’at-ul-Uqul of Al-Majlisi, volume 15 page 65 Hadith 8]

Sa’id Al-A’raj reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “The Prophet (s.) slept during the morning prayer because God made him sleep until the sun had risen and this was out of a mercy of your Lord for the people. Do you not consider that if someone slept until the sun had risen, men would humiliate him by saying: “Do you not respect your prayers?” So it became an example and a custom, because if a person said to someone: “You slept during the prayer!” The person would reply with: “The messenger has done that already!” So it became an example and a mercy by which God had mercy on this nation.” Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi writes: “Authentic (Sahih).” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, volume 3 page 165 Hadith 9; Mir’at-ul-Uqul, volume 15 page 65 Hadith 9]
