Can infallibility be attributed to a person without religious texts?

Answer:

Muhammad Al-Baqir (a.) reported that Imam Zain-ul-Abidin (a.) said: “The Imam is none other than an infallible one from us, and infallibility is not visible in the personality so that one would recognize it by it, and therefore it is none other than a appointed person.” He was asked: “O son of the messenger of God, what is the meaning of the infallibility?” He said: “He is the one who holds the rope of God and the rope of God is the Qur’an. The two do not separate until the Day of Resurrection and the Imam leads to the Qur’an and the Qur’an leads to the Imam and therefore God says: “This Qur’an leads to that which is most upright.” (17:9) [Ma’ani Al-Akhbar of As-Saduq, page 132 Hadith 1]

حدثنا أحمد بن محمد بن عبد الرحمن المقري، قال: حدثنا أبو عمرو محمد بن جعفر المقري الجرجاني، قال،: حدثنا أبو بكر محمد بن الحسن الموصلي ببغداد، قال: حدثنا محمد ابن عاصم الطريفي، قال: حدثنا عباس بن يزيد بن الحسن الكحال مولى زيد بن علي، قال: حدثني أبي، قال: حدثني موسى بن جعفر، عن أبيه جعفر بن محمد، عن أبيه محمد بن علي، عن أبيه علي بن الحسين عليهم السلام، قال: الامام منا لا يكون إلا معصوما وليست العصمة في ظاهر الخلقة فيعرف بها ولذلك لا يكون إلا منصوصا. فقيل له: يا ابن رسول الله فما معنى المعصوم؟ فقال: هو المعتصم بحبل الله وحبل الله هو القرآن لا يفترقان إلى يوم القيامة، والامام يهدي إلى القرآن والقرآن يهدي إلى الامام، وذلك قول الله عز وجل: إن هذا القرآن يهدي للتي هي أقوم

Jamal-ud-Din Al-Hilli writes: “We have already made it clear that the imam must be infallible and infallibility is a hidden thing that nobody knows about except God, so the imam must be appointed by God, because only He knows the conditions.” [Kashf-ul-Murad, page 343]

قال العلامة جمال الدين الحلي: إنا قد بينا أنه يجب أن يكون الإمام معصوما والعصمة أمر خفي لا يعلمها إلا الله تعالى فيجب أن يكون نصبه من قبل الله تعالى لأنه العالم بالشرط من دونه
