Is it legitimate to present the opposing party with their own reports as evidence?

Answer:

Mu’adh Ibn Muslim An-Nahawi reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “I heard that you sit in the prayer house and provide enlightenment (fatwa) to the people?” I said: “Yes, and i would like to ask you about it before i go out. I’m sitting in the prayer house and a man comes to me and asks me about something. If i know that he disagrees with you, then i tell him the reports according to which they act upon. Then a man comes to me and asks me about something that i know as your lover and admirer. So i tell him reports that reached me from you. When a man comes to me of whom i do not know what kind he is, then i say: “From this one this reached me and from that one that reached me. So I put your testimony in between.” He (as) said to me: “Proceed in this way, for I also proceed in this way!” [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah of Al-Hurr Al-Amili, Volume 28 Page 148 – 149 Hadith 36]

وعن حمدويه وإبراهيم ابني نصير. عن يعقوب بن يزيد، عن ابن أبي عمير، عن حسين بن معاذ، عن أبيه معاذ بن مسلم النحوي، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: بلغني أنك تقعد في الجامع فتفتي الناس؟ قلت: نعم وأردت أن أسألك عن ذلك قبل أن أخرج، إني أقعد في المسجد فيجئ الرجل فيسألني عن الشئ فإذا عرفته بالخلاف لكم أخبرته بما يفعلون، ويجئ الرجل أعرفه بمودتكم وحبكم فأخبره بما جاء عنكم، ويجئ الرجل لا أعرفه ولا أدري من هو فأقول: جاء عن فلان كذا، وجاء عن فلان كذا، فادخل قولكم فيما بين ذلك، فقال لي: اصنع كذا فاني كذا أصنع
