He spoke to a beautiful Abyssinian fellow of them, and he spoke to him in his own language for a while, until he brought him all that he wanted, and he gave him two pieces of silver, saying: “Give to each fellow of your companions thirty pieces of silver at the beginning of each month. Then they went out and I said: ” May my life be sacrificed to you, i saw you speaking with this lad in Abyssinian, what did you command him?” He said: “I commanded him to do good to his companions and to give them thirty pieces of silver at the beginning of each month, for when i looked at him, i knew that he was a reasonable lad of the sons of their king. Therefore i gave him all that i needed and he accepted my commission and with this a sincere lad is in place.” Then he said: “Perhaps you wonder that i speak to him in Abyssinian, but do not wonder, for what remained hidden to you about the Imam’s matter is more amazing and more numerous, and that is nothing from the Imam as far as his knowledge is concerned, other than a bird that took a drop of water from the ocean with its beak. Do you think that what he took in with his beak caused a lack in the ocean?” He said: “The Imam has the position of the ocean. That which he has does not succumb to exhaustion and his miracles are more numerous than that, and just as the bird did not cause a lack of the ocean when it took a drop of water from it with its beak, so nothing of the imam’s knowledge is diminished and his miracles do not succumb to exhaustion.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 26 page 190 Hadith 2]

[ 14. ] Bishr reported that Ali Ibn Abi Hamzah said: “A man among those close to Musa Al-Kazim (a.) came in and said: ” May my life be sacrificed to you, i like that you eat food with me.” After this, Musa Al-Kazim (a.) set off until he left together with him and entered the house. There was a bed in the house and he sat on the bed and under the bed there were a pair of doves. The male dove cooed with the female dove and the man went off to bring the food. Then he came back while Musa Al-Kazim (a.) laughed. The man said: ” May God make you laugh all your life, why did you laugh?” He said: “This male dove cooed to this female dove and said to her: “O my life partner, o my bride, by God, there is no one on earth i love more than you, except this person sitting on the bed.” I said: “May my life be sacrificed to you, you understand the language of birds?” He said: “Yes, we have been taught the language of the birds and we have been given of everything.” (27:16) [Madinat-ul-Ma’ajiz of Al-Bahrani, Volume 6 Page 275 Hadith 73]

[ 15. ] Muhammad Baqir reported that Ali Ibn Abi Hamzah said: “I embarked on the pilgrimage with Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.), whereupon we sat down under a dry palm tree for a part of the way. He moved his lips for a supplication, but i did not understand. Then he said: “O palm tree, feed us with what God has given you in provision for His servants! I looked at the palm tree as it leaned towards Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) and it bore leaves and ripe dates.” He said: “Come closer and mention the name (of God) and eat!” We ate the sweetest and best dates from it, when a Bedouin said to us: “I never saw such a tremendous magic as today!” Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) said: “We are the heirs of the prophets, neither a magician dwells among us nor a soothsayer, but we call on God and He answers. If I like, i call upon God and He will turn you into a dog. You will go to your abode, step inside and wave your tail to your loved ones.” The Bedouin, out of his ignorance, said: “Yes, call upon God!” At that moment he became a dog and his face became like this.” Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) said to me: “Follow him!” I followed him until he arrived at his residence and he was wagging his tail to his relatives and children, but they grabbed a stick for him and threw him out. I went to Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) and told him about what had happened and while we were talking about it the dog came over and stopped in front of Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) and shed tears. He came rolling in the dust and whimpered. He had mercy on him and called upon God, whereupon he became a Bedouin again. Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) said to him: “Have you found faith, o Bedouin? He said two thousand times: “Yes.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 47 page 110 Hadith 147]

[ 16. ] Hasan Ibn Ali reported that Ali Ibn Abi Hamzah said: “Without asking him about anything, Musa Al-Kazim (a.) had started to tell me: “O Ali, you will meet a Moroccan man tomorrow who asks you about me, so say to him: “‘By God, he is the Imam whom Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) has named for us.” Then when he asks you about what is allowed and forbidden, give him answers from me.” I said: “What is his identifying feature?” He said: “He is a large and a stout man, his name is Ya’qub and he is the forerunner of his people. If you wish to bring him in to me, bring him in.” By God, I was on a pilgrimage when a large and stout man came to me and said: “I want to inquire of you about your companion.” I said: “About which of my companions?” He said: “About the son of the so and so.” I said: “What is your name?” He said: “Ya’qub.” I said: “Where are you from?” He said: “From Morocco” And i said: ” From where do you know me?” He said “Somebody came to me in my sleep and told me “Meet Ali and ask him about anything you need.” Then i asked him questions about you until you were described to me.” I said: “Take a seat in this place until i have finished my circling and come to you, god willing.” I made the circumambulation and afterwards i came to him and talked to a reasonable man and he asked me to bring him in to Musa Al-Kazim (a.) and i took him by the hand and asked for permission, whereupon i was granted the permission. When Musa Al-Kazim (a.) saw him, he said: “O Ya’qub, you arrived yesterday and something bad happened between you and your brother in this and that place until you insulted each other and that is neither part of my religion nor of the religion of my fathers nor did we order that to be done to one another, so fear God alone, for both of you will be punished by death. As for your brother, he will die on his journey even before he arrives at his relatives and you will be sorry for what has happened. You two have separated, so God has separated your lifetimes.” The man said: ” May my life be sacrificed to you, when does my term expire?” He said: “The end of your term was near, but your aunt kept in touch, in the same way as you kept this and that touch with her in your home, so God has thereby changed your term to twenty years.” I met the man outside Mecca and he told me that his brother died in this way and that he was buried before he reached his relatives.” [Madinat-ul-Ma’ajiz of Al-Bahrani, Volume 6 page 242 Hadith 52]

Does Abdullah know whether it is made of camel skin or sheep skin? With us is the manuscript (Mushaf) of Fatimah (a.), but by God, there is no letter from the Qur’an in it, but it is a dictation of the messenger (s.) and the handwriting of Ali (a.), so how does Abdullah proceed when people from all fields gather around him and confront him? Are you not content to cling to our rope on the Day of Resurrection while we cling to the rope of our Prophet (s.) and he clings to the rope of his Lord?” [Basa’ir-ud-Darajat of As-Saffar, page 181 Hadith 33]

Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi writes: “The Short One is the Fox and a term for Abu Bakr that resembles him in trickery and deceit, and Umar has been called blue-eyed either because he resembles a bird that is called blue-eyed because of some of its bad traits or because blue-eyedness is hated by the Arabs and they take it as an insult, as the Exalted One says in the verse: “We gather the evildoers together blue-eyed that day.” (20:102) [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, volume 13 page 212 – 213 Hadith 5]
