Question:

Do the followers of Umar narrate that Imam Ali (a.) collected the Qur’an?

Answer:

Umm Salamah reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “Ali is with the Qur’an and the Qur’an is with Ali. They will never separate from each other until they reach the (Hereafter) pool with me.” Al-Hakim An-Naisaburi writes: “The tradition is authentic according to its chain (Sahih).” Muhammad Ibn Ahmad Adh-Dhahabi writes: “Authentic (Sahih).” [Al-Mustadrak, volume 3 page 134 Hadith 4628]

Ayyub As-Sakhtiyani reported that Muhammad Ibn Sirin said: “When the oath of allegiance was given to Abu Bakr, Ali (a.) hesitated with the oath of allegiance to him and sat down in his house. Therefore Abu Bakr sent a messenger to him: “What makes you hesitate towards me? Are you afraid of my command?” He said: “I was not afraid of your command, but i made an oath that i would not throw my garment over myself, except for the prayer, until i collected the copy (mushaf).
Muhammad Ibn Sirin said: “I learned that he wrote it down in the order of its revelation, and if you had got your hands on this book, you would have found much knowledge in it.” Abu Umar said: “The people of knowledge about the traditions reached the consensus that Muhammad Ibn Sirin is the most authentic of the following generation (Tabi’in) with regard to interrupted traditions (Mursal) and he did not narrate and accept anything except from a trustworthy source and that everything he narrates interrupted (Mursal) is authentic (Sahih).” [At-Tamhid by Ibn Abd Al-Barr, Volume 8 Page 300 – 301]

Abu Bakr Ibn Abi Shaibah writes: “Yazid Ibn Harun handed down to us from Ibn Awn that Muhammad Ibn Sirin said: “When Abu Bakr was appointed as successor, Ali (a.) sat down in his house, whereupon Abu Bakr was told and he sent a messenger to him: “Did you shy away from my succession?” He said: “No, i did not shy away from your succession, but in the Qur’an there has been made additions. When the messenger (s.) died, i took it upon myself not to throw a garment over me except for the prayer until i collected the Qur’an of the people.” Then Abu Bakr said: “How excellent this is, what you have planned.” [Al-Musannaf, Volume 10 Page 267 Hadith 30735]
