Miswar and Abd-ur-Rahman reported that Umar Ibnu l-Khattab said:“I heard Hisham Ibn Hakim Ibn Hizam reading the chapter Al-Furqan during the lifetime of the Messenger (s.). I listened to his reading and noticed that he read many letters that the Messenger (s.) did not teach me for the reading. I intended to jump on him during his prayer, but I tolerated until he said the peace salutation (Taslim). I grabbed him by his robe and said: “Who taught you to read the chapter that i heard you read? He said: “The messenger (s.) taught me the reading of it.” I said: “You have lied! The messenger taught me to read in a different way than how you read!” I brought him to the Messenger and said: “I heard him reading the chapter of Al-Furqan with words that you did not teach me!” The messenger (s.) said: “Read, O Hisham!” Then he read him the reading i heard him read, and the Messenger (s.) said: “This is exactly how it was sent down.” Then he said: “Read, O Umar! So I read the reading he had taught me to read. The Messenger of God said: “This is exactly how it was revealed. This Qur’an was sent down in seven words. So read what is easy for you.” [Sahih-ul-Bukhari, Hadith 4706]

حدثنا سعيد بن عفير قال حدثني الليث قال حدثني عقيل عن ابن شهاب قال حدثني عروة بن الزبير أن المسور بن مخرمة وعبد الرحمن بن عبد القاري حدثاه أنهما سمعا عمر بن الخطاب يقول سمعت هشام بن حكيم بن حزام يقرأ سورة الفرقان في حياة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فاستمعت لقراءته فإذا هو يقرأ على حروف كثيرة لم يقرئنيها رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فكدت أساوره في الصلاة فتصبرت حتى سلم فلببته بردائه فقلت من أقرأك هذه السورة التي سمعتك تقرأ قال أقرأنيها رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقلت كذبت فإن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قد أقرأنيها على غير ما قرأت فانطلقت به أقوده إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقلت إني سمعت هذا يقرأ بسورة الفرقان على حروف لم تقرئنيها فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أرسله اقرأ يا هشام فقرأ عليه القراءة التي سمعته يقرأ فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كذلك أنزلت ثم قال اقرأ يا عمر فقرأت القراءة التي أقرأني فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كذلك أنزلت إن هذا القرآن أنزل على سبعة أحرف فاقرءوا ما تيسر منه

Ibn Shihab reported that Anas Ibn Malik said: “Hudhaifah Ibnu l-Yaman came to Uthman when the Syrians were conducting campaigns with the Iraqis to conquer Armenia and Azerbaijan. Hudhaifah was concerned about their disagreement on reading and said to Uthman: “O Commander of the Faithful, preserve this community before they disagree about the book, as the Jews and Nazarene disagreed.” Thereupon Uthman sent a letter to Hafsah saying: ” Give us the sheets so that we may put them together in codes (Mushaf). Then we will send them back to you.” Then she sent Hafsah to Uthman and he gave an order to Zaid Ibn Thabit, Abdullah Ibnu z-Zubair, Sa’id Ibn Al-As and Abd-ur-Rahman Ibnu l-Harith Ibn Hisham to compose them into codes. Uthman said to three chosen men of the Quraish: “If you disagree with Zaid Ibn Thabit about something in the Qur’an, write it down in the language of the Quraish, for it was sent down in their language.” Then they did so until they put the sheets together in codexes. Uthman sent it back to Hafsah and sent a codex (mushaf) to each area that they had compiled and he gave an order that everything else from the Qur’an be burned on every sheet or codex.” Kharijah Ibn Zaid reported that he heard Zaid Ibn Thabit say: “A verse in the chapter Al-Ahzab was lost when the codes were written, which i heard the messenger of God (s.) reading. Then we gathered and found it with Khuzaimah Ibn Thabit Al-Ansari: “Among the believers there are men who have made true what they have committed themselves to God.” (33:23) Then we added it to the chapter in the Code (Mushaf).” [Sahih-ul-Bukhari, Hadith 4702]

حدثنا موسى حدثنا إبراهيم حدثنا ابن شهاب أن أنس بن مالك حدثه أن حذيفة بن اليمان قدم على عثمان وكان يغازي أهل الشأم في فتح إرمينية وأذربيجان مع أهل العراق فأفزع حذيفة اختلافهم في القراءة فقال حذيفة لعثمان يا أمير المؤمنين أدرك هذه الأمة قبل أن يختلفوا في الكتاب اختلاف اليهود والنصارى فأرسل عثمان إلى حفصة أن أرسلي إلينا بالصحف ننسخها في المصاحف ثم نردها إليك فأرسلت بها حفصة إلى عثمان فأمر زيد بن ثابت وعبد الله بن الزبير وسعيد بن العاص وعبد الرحمن بن الحارث بن هشام فنسخوها في المصاحف وقال عثمان للرهط القرشيين الثلاثة إذا اختلفتم أنتم وزيد بن ثابت في شيء من القرآن فاكتبوه بلسان قريش فإنما نزل بلسانهم ففعلوا حتى إذا نسخوا الصحف في المصاحف رد عثمان الصحف إلى حفصة وأرسل إلى كل أفق بمصحف مما نسخوا وأمر بما سواه من القرآن في كل صحيفة أو مصحف أن يحرق قال ابن شهاب وأخبرني خارجة بن زيد بن ثابت سمع زيد بن ثابت قال فقدت آية من الأحزاب حين نسخنا المصحف قد كنت أسمع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقرأ بها فالتمسناها فوجدناها مع خزيمة بن ثابت الأنصاري من المؤمنين رجال صدقوا ما عاهدوا الله عليه فألحقناها في سورتها في المصحف
