Muhammad Al-Hurr Al-Amili writes:

قول تعالى في حق عيسى عليه السلام إني متوفيك ورافعك إلي نقل الطبرسي عن ابن عباس إن المراد إني متوفيك وفاة موت وقد تقدم مثله عن رئيس المحدثين محمد بن علي بن بابويه والآية واضحة في ذلك وهي تدل على أن نزول عيسى في آخر الزمان إلى الأرض من قسم الرجعة وقد أجمع على نقل ذلك جميع المسلمين ونقل إجماعهم عليه جماعة من العلماء ونقل الطبرسي عن بعض العامة أن عيسى عليه السلام لم يمت وأنه رفع إلى السماء من غير وفاة وتعرضوا لتأويل الآية تارة بالحمل على وفاة النوم وتارة بما هو أبعد من ذلك وظاهر أن ذلك كله باطل وغلو عظيم في إنكار الرجعة والإمامية لا يقبلون ذلك التأويل ولا يلزمهم العمل به

“About the statement of God to Jesus (a.): “I will cause you to die and raise you up to Me.” (3:55) At-Tabarsi reported that Abdullah Ibn Abbas said:”The statement ‘I will cause you to die” means passing away by death. A similar statement has already been presented by the leader of the tradition, Muhammad Ibn Ali As-Saduq, and the verse clearly states this and proves that the descent of Jesus (a. ) to the earth, which occurs in the end times, is to be classified in the realm of the return (Raj’ah) and all Muslims agreed on the report about it and their consensus (Ijma’) about it was reported by a host of knowledgeable people, although At-Tabarsi reported from some of the general public the view, that Jesus (a. ) did not die and was lifted up to heaven without passing away and sometimes they interpreted the verse to mean sleep and sometimes they used even more absurd things than that, but all this is obviously wrong and a gross exaggeration aimed at denying the return (Raj’ah) and neither do the followers of the Imams (a.) accept this interpretation nor are they obliged to follow it.” [Al-Iqaz Min Al-Haj’ah, page 114]
