Question:

Is the meat of animals slaughtered in the name of Christ allowed?

Answer:

Hanan reported that he told Imam As-Sadiq (a.): “Al-Husain Ibn Al-Mundhir narrated from you that you said: “The slaughtered animal lies by name and no one has certainty about it except with its people.” He said: “You have caused something in it, that is not desired by me (Mushtahan).” Hanan said: “Therefore i questioned a Nazarene and said to him: “What do you say when you slaughter? He said: “We say: “In the name of Christ.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 6 Page 238 Hadith 3]

وعنه، عن حنان قال: قلت لأبي عبد الله عليه السلام: إن الحسين بن المنذر روى عنك أنك قلت: إن الذبيحة بالاسم ولا يؤمن عليها إلا أهلها، فقال: إنهم أحدثوا فيها شيئا لا أشتهيه قال حنان: فسألت نصرانيا فقلت له: أي شئ تقولون إذا ذبحتم؟ فقال نقول: باسم المسيح

Ibrahim Ibn Hashim reported that Hanan Ibn Sudair said: “I and my father came in to Abu Abdillah As-Sadiq (a.) and said to him: “May God sacrifice us for you, we have companions from the Nazarenes and go to them. They slaughter for us chickens, poultry and young goats. Do we eat of them?” He said: “Do not eat it and do not approach it, because they mention at their slaughtering the one whose consumption i do not love for you (Mahbub).” When we went to Kufa, some of them invited us, but we refused to go, whereupon they said: “What is the matter with you? You used to come to us. But you don’t do it today?” We said: “We have a man of knowledge (a.) who forbade us, and indicated that you mention in your slaughter something whose consumption he does not love for us.” He said: “By God, this knower is the most knowledgeable of men and the most knowledgeable of the creatures of God. He has found himself confirmed, by God, because we say: “In the name of Christ.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 6 Page 241 Hadith 15]

علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن حنان بن سدير قال: دخلنا على أبي عبد الله عليه السلام أنا وأبي فقلنا له: جعلنا الله فداك، إن لنا خلطاء من النصارى وإنا نأتيهم فيذبحون لنا الدجاج والفراخ والجداء أفنأكلها؟ قال: فقال: لا تأكلوها ولا تقربوها فإنهم يقولون على ذبائحهم ما لا أحب لكم أكلها، قال: فلما قدمنا الكوفة دعانا بعضهم فأبينا أن نذهب فقال: ما بالكم كنتم تأتونا ثم تركتموه اليوم؟ قال: فقلنا: إن عالما لنا عليه السلام نهانا وزعم أنكم تقولون على ذبائحكم شيئا لا يحب لنا أكلها، فقال: من هذا العالم هذا والله أعلم الناس وأعلم من خلق الله، صدق والله إنا لنقول: بسم المسيح عليه السلام

Abu Basir reported that he asked Imam As-Sadiq (a.): “What is the matter with the slaughtered Jew?” He said: ” Allowed (Halal).” I said: “Even if he mentions the name of Christ?” He said: “Even if he mentions the name of Christ, for he means God.” [Al-Istibsar of At-Tusi, Volume 4 Page 85 Hadith 26]

عنه عن الحسن عن القاسم بن محمد عن علي عن أبي بصير قال: سألت أبا عبد الله عليه السلام عن ذبيحة اليهودي؟ فقال: حلال قلت: فإن سمى المسيح؟ قال: وإن سمى فإنه إنما أراد به الله

Abd-ul-Malik Ibn Amr reported that he asked Imam As-Sadiq (a.): “What do you say about the slaughtered of the Nazarene?” He said: “There is no problem with that (La Ba’s ).” I said: “But they mention Christ with it!” He said: “By Christ they mean God.” [Man La Yahduruh-ul-Faqih of As-Saduq, Volume 3 Page 331 Hadith 4181]

وفي رواية عبد الملك بن عمرو عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: قلت له ما تقول في ذبائح النصارى؟ فقال: لا بأس بها، قلت: فإنهم يذكرون عليها المسيح فقال: إنما أرادوا بالمسيح الله تعالى
