Question:

Are among the companions of the Prophet (s.) only believers or also hypocrites?

Answer:

Qais reported that he asked Ammar Ibn Yasir: “Do you consider your action concerning the matter of Ali to be an opinion or a matter that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) commanded you?” He said: “The Messenger (s.) did not give us anything that he did not give to all people, but Hudhaifah told me that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “Among my companions there are twelve hypocrites. Among them, eight will not enter Paradise until a camel crosses the eye of a needle. Eight and four of them would be sufficient ulcers.” I did not memorize what Shu’bah said about them.” [Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2779]

حدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي شيبة حدثنا أسود بن عامر حدثنا شعبة بن الحجاج عن قتادة عن أبي نضرة عن قيس قال قلت لعمار أرأيتم صنيعكم هذا الذي صنعتم في أمر علي أرأيا رأيتموه أو شيئا عهده إليكم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال ما عهد إلينا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم شيئا لم يعهده إلى الناس كافة ولكن حذيفة أخبرني عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في أصحابي اثنا عشر منافقا فيهم ثمانية لا يدخلون الجنة حتى يلج الجمل في سم الخياط ثمانية منهم تكفيكهم الدبيلة وأربعة لم أحفظ ما قال شعبة فيهم

Yahya Ibn Sharaf An-Nawawi writes: “As for his statement: “Among my companions are twelve hypocrites.” It means: “Those who are ascribed to my companionship.” [Sharh Sahih Muslim, Volume 17 page 125]
