Question:

Why were the hypocrites among the companions not killed?

Answer:

Muhammad Ibn Ya’qub reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “By God, if people did not say: “Muhammad gets support from people whom he kills after he defeats his enemy.” Then i would have gathered many of my companions and cut off their heads.” [At-Tanbih Bil-Ma’lum of Al-Hurr Al-Amili, page 161]

عن محمد بن الحسين عن محمد بن يعقوب عن النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم قال: والله لولا أن الناس يقول إن محمدا استعان بقوم فلما ظفر بعدوه قتلهم لقدمت كثيرا من أصحابي فضربت أعناقهم

Muhammad Al-Baqir (a.) and Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “Would i not detest it if one said: “Muhammad gets support from people he kills after he defeats his enemy.” Then i would have cut off the heads of many people.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 8, Page 345 Hadith 544]

جميل، عن زرارة، عن أحدهما (الباقر والصادق) عليهما السلام قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله: لولا أني أكره أن يقال إن محمدا استعان بقوم حتى إذا ظفر بعدوه قتلهم لضربت أعناق قوم كثير

Hajar Al-Bajali reported that Imam Muhammad Al-Baqir (a.) said: “If Ali (a.) had found enough supporters, he would have cut off the heads of both of them (Abu Bakr and Umar).” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 30 page 383]

عن حجر البجلي عن محمد بن علي الباقر عليه السلام قال: لو وجد علي أعوانا لضرب أعناقهما (أبي بكر وعمر)؛

Evidence:

Amr Ibn Dinar reported that Jabir Ibn Abdillah said: “We took part in a campaign and a man from the emigrants kicked a man from the helpers on the backside. Then the helper said: “O you helpers!” And the emigrant said: “O you emigrants!” Thereupon God let His messenger (s.) hear it. He said: ” What’s going on here?” They said: “A man of the emigrants kicked a man of the helpers on the backside.” Then the helper said: “O you helpers!” And the emigrant said: “O you emigrants!” Then the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “Let it go, for it is filled with a great stink!” When the Messenger (s.) arrived at that time, the helpers were in great numbers. Later, the number of emigrants increased. Abdullah Ibn Ubayy said: “They did this? By God, when we return to Medina, the honorable ones will throw the humiliated out of the city!” Umar Ibn Al-Khattab said: “O Messenger of God, let me cut off the head of this hypocrite!” Then the Messenger (s.) said: “Let him be, for the people should not say that Muhammad kills his companions!” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 4624]

حدثنا الحميدي حدثنا سفيان قال حفظناه من عمرو بن دينار قال سمعت جابر بن عبد الله رضي الله عنهما يقول كنا في غزاة فكسع رجل من المهاجرين رجلا من الأنصار فقال الأنصاري يا للأنصار وقال المهاجري يا للمهاجرين فسمعها الله رسوله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال ما هذا فقالوا كسع رجل من المهاجرين رجلا من الأنصار فقال الأنصاري يا للأنصار وقال المهاجري يا للمهاجرين فقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم دعوها فإنها منتنة قال جابر وكانت الأنصار حين قدم النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أكثر ثم كثر المهاجرون بعد فقال عبد الله بن أبي أوقد فعلوا والله لئن رجعنا إلى المدينة ليخرجن الأعز منها الأذل فقال عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه دعني يا رسول الله أضرب عنق هذا المنافق قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم دعه لا يتحدث الناس أن محمدا يقتل أصحابه

Zaid Ibn Wahb reported that he heard Hudhaifah say: “A man among the hypocrites died. So i did not pray over him. Umar said: “What stopped you from praying over him?” I said: “He is one of them.” Umar said: “By God, am i one of them?” I said: “No.” And Umar wept.” Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani writes: “The tradition is authentic according to its chain (Sahih).” [Al-Matalib-ul-Aliyah, Volume 14 Page 702 Hadith 3623]

وقال: مسدد:، ثنا: يحيى، عن الأعمش، عن زيد بن وهب قال: سمعت حذيفة، يقول: مات رجل من المنافقين فلم أصل عليه ، فقال عمر: ما منعك أن تصلي عليه ؟، قلت: إنه منهم، فقال: أبالله منهم أنا؟ ، قلت: لا، قال: فبكى عمر، إسناده صحيح

Nazzal Ibn Sabrah reported that Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud and Hudhaifah joined Uthman. Uthman said to Hudhaifah: “It reached me that you said this and that?” Hudhaifah replied: “No, by God, i did not say it.” When he went out, Abdullah said to him: “What is it with you that you do not say what i heard you say?” Hudhaifah replied: “I purchase one part of my faith for another for fear that all of it will perish.” [Al-Musannaf by Ibn Abi Shaibah, Volume 11 Page 359 – 360 Hadith 33595]
