Question:

One of the innovators made the claim that Imam Al-Husain (a.) had wished Mu’awiyah the mercy of God after he learned of his death. As source he cited Al-Irshad of Al-Mufid on page 303.

Answer:

The servant of Umar has lied!

Such a statement is neither in the 1st volume of Al-Irshad on page 303 nor is it in the 2nd volume on page 303. So where does this report come from?

In Maqtal Al-Husain by Abu Mikhnaf Al-Azdi it says on page 5

“Al-Walid read him (Husain) the letter, announced the death of Mu’awiyah and called upon him to take the oath of allegiance (Yazid). Thereupon Husain said: “We belong to God and we will return to Him, and may God be merciful to Mu’awiyah, and He will share the reward.”

And on the first page it says before:

“Taken from Tarikh-ul-Umam Wa Al-Muluk by the historian Abu Ja’far Muhammad Ibn Jarir At-Tabari.”

In Tarikh-ul-Umam of At-Tabari the 3rd volume on page 270 says

“Al-Walid read him (Husain) the letter, announced the death of Mu’awiyah and called upon him to take the oath of allegiance (Yazid). Thereupon Husain said: “We belong to God and we will return to Him, and may God be merciful to Mu’awiyah and He will share the reward.”

The quotation is thus a worthless fabrication of the innovators.

Abdullah Ibn Sinan reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “There are three things in this world and the next that are the pride and adornment of the believer: The prayer in the last part of the night, his abandonment of hope in what is in the hands of the people and his closeness (Wilayah) to the Imam from the family of Muhammad (s.) and three creatures are the worst by which the best of the creatures have been tested: One of them is Abu Sufyan who fought and opposed the Messenger (s.) and Mu’awiyah who fought and opposed Ali (a.) and Yazid, the son of Mu’awiyah, who fought and opposed Al-Husain, the son of Ali (a.), until he finally killed him.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 8 Page 234 Hadith 311]

Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “Fire is forbidden to the one who believes in me, loves Ali and is close to him. May God curse him who fought and opposed Ali! Ali is from me as the skin between the eye and the eyelid.” [Ghaiat-ul-Maram of Al-Bahrani, Volume 2 Page 303 Hadith 26]

Abu Basir reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “Noah (a.) brought the dog and the pig into the ark, but not any illegitimate offspring. Our enemies are worse than a child who is born illegitimate.” [Al-Fusul-ul-Muhimmah of Al-Hurr Al-Amili, Volume 3 Page 267 Hadith 20]

One response to “Mercy for Mu’awiyah?”

  1. […] Mercy for Mu’awiyah? – – Anniversary of the death of Mu’awiyah? – – Mu’awiyah died as a disbeliever […]
