Abdullah Ibn Abbas reported that Umar Ibnu l-Khattab said: “God sent Muhammad (s.) with the truth and sent down the Scriptures to him. So among the things God sent down was the verse about stoning. So we read and understood it and kept it in our minds. Therefore the messenger of God stoned and we stoned after him. So I fear, that for the people such a long time will pass, that someone will say: “By God, we cannot find the verse about stoning in the Scripture of God.” Whereupon they go astray, by leaving a duty which God sent down and the stoning is a duty in the Scripture of God for the one among the married men and women who committed fornication, when the proof was given, or if there was a pregnancy, or a confession.” [Sahih-ul-Bukhari, page 1689, Hadith 6830]

حدثنا عبد العزيز بن عبد الله حدثني إبراهيم بن سعد عن صالح عن ابن شهاب عن عبيد الله بن عبد الله بن عتبة بن مسعود عن عبد الله بن عباس عن عمر بن الخطاب قال: إن الله بعث محمدا صلى الله عليه وسلم بالحق وانزل عليه الكتاب فكان مما انزل الله آية الرجم فقرأناها وعقلناها ووعيناها فلذا رجم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ورجمنا بعده فأخشى أن طال بالناس زمان أن يقول قائل والله ما نجد آية الرجم في كتاب الله فيضلوا بترك فريضة أنزلها الله والرجم في كتاب الله حق على من زنى إذا أحصن من الرجال والنساء إذا قامت البينة أو كان الحبل أو الاعتراف

Umar does not say that the verse was once in the scripture of God and is no longer there today, but that the verse is still there as a duty in the scripture of God and he fears that one day it will be missed in it.
