Allah (swt) says: And when it is said to them: “Follow what God has revealed” they say: “We prefer to follow what we found amongst our fathers.” What then, even if Satan calls them to the chastisement of the fire?” [Luqman: 31:21]

Since the Holy Infallibles (a.s.) also receive revelation, we can safely say that these words also refer to their noble sayings (Ahadith). And so it boils down to following the two weighty things (Thaqalayn), the Holy Quran and the noble sayings (Ahadith) of the Ahulbayt (a).

,,Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (a) said: “You and Taqlid? Whoever adorns himself with this in religion is destroyed. Verily Allah said: They took their scholars and their monks as lords besides God [9:31]. Nay, by Allah, they did not pray or fast, and they permitted what was forbidden to them and made that which was forbidden permissible. They imitated them in this (taqlid) and obeyed them and they did not recognise (that they worshipped them).”

[Tasheeh ul-Itiqaad, Sheikh Al-Mufid, page 72]

Look at how the book is named ,,Correction of Faith.” Have you corrected your faith on the basis of the above-mentioned tradition? Do you not ask yourselves whether you are on the path of salvation or destruction? How could this imitation (taqlid) be imposed on the Shias as a matter of obligation?

Imam Ali (a) said: ,,How can Allah (s.w.t.) impose on His servants to obey someone who is veiled from the secrets of the heavens and the earth?”

[Hadith al-Tariq]

Imam as-Sadiq (a) said: ,,He has lied, for he has recognised us, but held to the grasp of someone other than ours.”

[Bihar al-Anwar, Volume 2, Page 83, Hadith 7]

Abu Ja’far al-Baqir (a) said: ,,Whatever does not come from this House, it is false.”

[Bihar al-Anwar, Volume 2, Page 94, Hadith 32]

Imam as-Sadiq (a) said: ,,Judgments are of two kinds – from Allah (swt) and from the ignorant. Whoever makes a mistake in the judgement of Allah (swt), has given the judgement of the ignorant.”

[Wasail ush-Shia, vol. 27, hadith 33106]

Imam Ali (a) said: ,,If there are two different claims, then one of them is wrong.”

[Nahj ul-Balagha, Vol. 4, page 43, Wisdom 183.]

Abdul Rahman ibn al-Hajjaj asked Abu Abdillah (a) about sitting with people of opinion. He (a) replied: ,,When you sit with them, you should be careful of two qualities that have led many people to destruction – making a religion out of opinions and giving fatwas without knowledge.”

[Wasail ush-Shia, Vol. 27, Hadith 33128.]

Conclusion:

In the work Wasail ush-Shia ,by the respected scholar Sheikh Hurr al-Amili (r), there is a chapter on taqlid in volume 27. In this chapter there are over 100 traditions which speak against the taqlid of a fallible person. Assuming that only one tradition is correct, those who follow this forbidden thing (taqlid of a fallible person) would have a big problem on the Day of Resurrection.
