Question:

Which liars are meant by the 49th and 50th verses of the 4th chapter “An-Nisa’”?

Response:

Ali Ibn Ibrahim Al-Qummi writes: “As for His statement: “Have you not seen those who claim purity for themselves? But it is God Who purifies whom He wills.” (4:49) So it is those who titled themselves (Abu Bakr) As-Siddiq, (Umar) Al-Faruq, and (Uthman) Dhu An-Nurain: “They will not be wronged by a date.” (4:49) It is the shell on the seed. After that He addressed them and said: “See how they fabricate lies about God!” (4:50) They are those who snatched away the right of the family of Muhammad (s.).” [Tafsir-ul-Qummi, Vol. 1 page 140]

Fadl Ibn Hasan reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: “It descended because of the Jews and Nazarenes when they said: “We are the sons of God and His beloved ones.” (5:18) They said: “Never will anyone enter Paradise unless he was a Jew or a Nazarene.” (2:111) [Nur-uth-Thaqalain of Al-Huwaizi, Volume 1 page 489]
