“O you, who believe, when you stand for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to your elbows and wipe your heads and your feet up to your ankles.” [Al-Ma’idah 5:6]

يا أيها الذين آمنوا إذا قمتم إلى الصلاة فاغسلوا وجوهكم وأيديكم إلى المرافق وامسحوا برءوسكم وأرجلكم إلى الكعبين

Salim and Ghalib reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) was asked: “What is the matter of wiping the feet?” He said: “That is that, with which the Angel Gabriel (a.) was sent down for.” [Al-Wasa’il of Al-Amili, Vol. 1, page 419, Hadith 4]

وعنه، عن فضالة، عن حماد بن عثمان، عن سالم، وغالب بن هذيل قال: سألت أبا جعفر عليه السلام عن المسح على الرجلين؟ فقال: هو الذي نزل به جبرئيل

Husain Ibn Ali (a.) reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “I sat down to perform the ablution, whereupon the Messenger of God (s.) came while I had started the ablution. He said to me: “You should take a handful of water and rinse your nose and your mouth.” After that I washed my face three times and he said: “Twice is enough for you.” I washed my arm and wiped my head twice and he said: “Once is enough for you.” And I washed one foot of mine. He said to me: “O Ali, go between the toes. It makes one safe from the Fire.” [Al-Wasa’il of Al-Amili, Volume 1 page 421 – 422 Hadith 15]

My comment on this Hadith: Could be said in Taqiyyah.

وبإسناده عن محمد بن الحسن الصفار، عن عبد الله بن المنبه عن الحسين بن علوان، عن عمرو بن خالد، عن زيد بن علي، عن آبائه، عن علي عليه السلام قال: جلست أتوضأ فأقبل رسول الله حين ابتدأت في الوضوء فقال لي: تمضمض واستنشق واستن، ثم غسلت وجهي ثلاثا فقال: قد يجزيك من ذلك المرتان، قال: فغسلت ذراعي ومسحت برأسي مرتين فقال: قد يجزيك من ذلك المرة، وغسلت قدمي قال: فقال لي: يا علي خلل بين الأصابع تخلل بالنار

Muhammad ibn Hasan reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “The Messenger of God (s.) performed the ablution and wiped over his feet and sandals.” [Al-Wasa’il of Al-Amili, Vol. 1, page 419, Hadith 5]

محمد بن الحسن عن أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام عن النبي صلى الله عليه وآله أنه توضأ ومسح على قدميه ونعليه

Ayyub ibn Nuh reported that he asked Imam Ar-Rida (a.) about wiping the feet and he said: “The ablution for the prayer is performed by wiping and that is nothing but an obligation and whoever washes, (for him) there is no problem.” [Al-Wasa’il of Al-Amili, Vol. 1, page 421, Hadith 13]

وبإسناده عن سعد بن عبد الله، عن أحمد بن محمد، عن أيوب بن نوح، قال: كتبت إلى أبي الحسن عليه السلام أسأله عن المسح على القدمين، فقال: الوضوء بالمسح ولا يجب فيه إلا ذاك ومن غسل فلا بأس

My comment on this Hadith: It may be that the Imam is speaking about that there is no problem washing your feet (for cleansing) after you have wiped your feet. God knows best.

Ammar ibn Musa reported that he said to Imam As-Sadiq (a.): “How is it about a man, who performs everything from the ablution for the prayer except for his feet and then dips both of them in water?” He said: “That is sufficient for him.” [Al-Wasa’il of Al-Amili, Vol. 1, page 421, Hadith 14]

وبإسناده عن محمد بن أحمد بن يحيى، عن أحمد بن الحسن بن علي بن فضال، عن عمرو بن سعيد، عن مصدق بن صدقه، عن عمار بن موسى، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام في الرجل يتوضأ الوضوء كله إلا رجليه، ثم يخوض بهما الماء خوضا، قال: أجزأه ذلك

Abu Hamam reported that Imam Ar-Rida (a.) said: “For the obligatory washing of the prayer, the wiping is mentioned in the Book of God and washing in the ablution for the prayer is only for cleansing.” [Al-Wasa’il of Al-Amili, Volume 1, page 420, Hadith 11]

وبإسناده عن محمد بن علي بن محبوب، عن أحمد بن محمد عن أبي همام، عن أبي الحسن الرضا عليه السلام في وضوء الفريضة في كتاب الله تعالى: المسح، والغسل في الوضوء للتنظيف

My comment on this Hadith: Here it explains washing is only done as a form of cleansing not part of Wudhu. God knows best.

Zurarah reported that he (the Imam) said: “If you have performed the ablution for the prayer and wiped the feet for ablution and then think, that this is part of the obligation, this is not the ablution for the prayer. Start by wiping the feet and when washing comes to your mind so that you wash it, then wipe after that so that the latter of it becomes the obligation.” [Al-Wasa’il of Al-Amili, Volume 1, page 296, Hadith 12]

وبإسناده عن الحسين بن سعيد، عن حماد، عن حريز، عن زرارة، قال: قال لي: لو أنك توضأت فجعلت مسح الرجلين غسلا ثم أضمرت أن ذلك من المفروض لم يكن ذلك بوضوء، ثم قال: ابدأ بالمسح على الرجلين فإن بدا لك غسل فغسلته فامسح بعده ليكون آخر ذلك المفروض

Ma’mar Ibn Umar reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: “Wiping over the head in the place of three fingers is sufficient and so is over the foot.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 3, Page 29, Hadith 1]

عدة من أصحابنا، عن أحمد بن محمد، عن شاذان بن الخليل النيسابوري عن معمر بن عمر، عن أبي جعفر عليه السلام قال: يجزئ من المسح على الرأس موضع ثلاث أصابع وكذلك الرجل

Muhammad ibn Muslim reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “The ears do not belong to the face or the head. Wipe the top of your head and wipe the feet and start with the right side!” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 3, Page 29, Hadith 2]

علي بن إبراهيم: عن أبيه، عن ابن أبي عمير، عن أبي أيوب، عن محمد بن مسلم، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: الأذنان ليسا من الوجه ولا من الرأس، قال: وذكر المسح فقال: امسح على مقدم رأسك وامسح على القدمين وابدأ بالشق الأيمن

Ahmad Ibn Muhammad reported that he asked Imam Ar-Rida (a.): “How do you wipe the feet?” He then put his hand on the toes and wiped them towards the ankles to the outside of the foot. I said: “My life be sacrificed to you, what if someone should ask: “With two of the fingers in this way?” He said: “Nay, only with his hand.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 3, Page 30, Hadith 6]

عدة من أصحابنا، عن أحمد بن محمد، عن أحمد بن محمد بن أبي نصر، عن أبي الحسن الرضا عليه السلام قال سألته: عن المسح على القدمين كيف هو؟ فوضع كفه على الأصابع فمسحها إلى الكعبين إلى ظاهر القدم، فقلت: جعلت فداك لو أن رجلا قال بإصبعين من أصابعه هكذا؟ فقال: لا إلا بكفه

Abdullah Ibn Jabalah reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “It may be, that a man serves God for forty years and does not obey Him in the washing for the prayer.” [Al-Ilal of As-Saduq, Vol. 1, page 289, Hadith 1]

أبى رحمه الله قال: حدثنا سعد بن عبد الله، عن الحسن بن علي الكوفي عن عبد الله بن جبلة عن رجل، عن أبي عبد الله عليه الصلاة والسلام قال: إن الرجل ليعبد الله أربعين سنة وما يطيعه في الوضوء

Muhammad ibn Ali reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “It may be, that a man serves God for forty years, but is not obedient to Him in the washing for the prayer, because he washes, that which God ordered him to wipe.” [Al-Wasa’il of Al-Amili, Vol. 1, page 422, Hadith 16]

محمد بن علي بن الحسين، قال: قال الصادق عليه السلام: إن الرجل ليعبد الله أربعين سنة، وما يطيعه في الوضوء، لأنه يغسل ما أمر الله بمسحه

Muhammad ibn Marwan reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “It may be that 60 and 70 years fall upon a man and God does not accept his prayer.” I said: “How could that be?” He said: “Because he washes that, which God had ordered him to wipe.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 3, Page 31, Hadith 9]

محمد بن يحيى، عن محمد بن الحسين، عن الحكم بن مسكين، عن محمد بن مروان قال: قال أبو عبد الله عليه السلام إنه يأتي على الرجل ستون وسبعون سنة ما قبل الله منه صلاة، قلت: وكيف ذاك؟ قال: لأنه يغسل ما أمر الله بمسحه

Rifa’ah Ibn Rafi’ reported that Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “Prayer is not valid from anyone until he performs the ablution of prayer as commanded by God. One washes his face and hands up to the elbows and one wipes his head and feet up to the ankles.” Al-Hakim An-Naisaburi writes: “This tradition is authentic (Sahih) according to the conditions of the two scholars (Al-Bukhari and Muslim).” Muhammad Ibn Ahmad Adh-Dhahabi writes: “It is in accordance with the conditions of the two.” [Al-Mustadrak of Al-Hakim, Hadith 881.]

Rifa’ah Ibn Rafi’ reported that Prophet Muhammad (s) said: “Prayer is not valid from anyone until he performs the ablution of prayer as commanded by God. One washes his face and hands up to the elbows and one wipes his head and feet up to the ankles.” Muhammad Nasir-ud-Din Al-Albani writes: “Authentic (Sahih).” [Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith 856; Sahih-ut-Targhib of Al-Albani, Hadith 536]

حدثنا الحسن بن علي حدثنا هشام بن عبد الملك والحجاج بن منهال قالا حدثنا همام حدثنا إسحق بن عبد الله بن أبي طلحة عن علي بن يحيى بن خلاد عن أبيه عن عمه رفاعة بن رافع بمعناه قال فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إنها لا تتم صلاة أحدكم حتى يسبغ الوضوء كما أمره الله عز وجل فيغسل وجهه ويديه إلى المرفقين ويمسح برأسه ورجليه إلى الكعبين. وقال محمد ناصر الدين الألباني: صحيح

Dawud ibn Abi Hind reported that Amir Ash-Sha’bi said: “The Angel Gabriel (a.) was sent down with the wiping. Do you not see that in the ablution of prayer one wipes with the earth and it is not the ablution, nevertheless one abolishes the wiping?” [Tafsir-ut-Tabari, Vol. 6, page 176, Hadith 10513]

حدثني أبو السائب، قال: ثنا ابن إدريس، عن داود بن أبي هند، عن الشعبي، قال: نزل جبريل بالمسح. قال: ثم قال الشعبي: ألا ترى أن التيمم أن يمسح ما كان غسلا ويلغي ما كان مسحا؟

Isma’il reported that he said to Amir Ash-Sha’bi: “A group claims that Gabriel (s.) descended with the washing of the feet.” He said: “The angel Gabriel (a.) descended with the wiping of the feet.” [Tafsir-ut-Tabari, Vol. 6, page 176, Hadith 10518]

حدثنا ابن أبي زياد، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا إسماعيل، قال: قلت لعامر: إن ناسا: يقولون: إن جبريل صلى الله عليه وسلم نزل بغسل الرجلين، فقال: نزل جبريل بالمسح

Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Uqail reported that Ar-Rabi’ said: “Abdullah ibn Abbas came to me and asked me about the tradition which says that the Messenger (s) performed the ablution of prayer and washed his feet. Abdullah ibn Abbas said: “People reject everything except for the washing and I do not find anything in the Book of God other than the wiping!” [Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 458]

حدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي شيبة حدثنا ابن علية عن روح بن القاسم عن عبد الله بن محمد بن عقيل عن الربيع قالت أتاني ابن عباس فسألني عن هذا الحديث تعني حديثها الذي ذكرت أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم توضأ وغسل رجليه فقال ابن عباس إن الناس أبوا إلا الغسل ولا أجد في كتاب الله إلا المسح

Ar-Rabi’ reported that Abdullah ibn Abbas said: “I find nothing in the Book of God except for washing of two areas and wiping of two.” [Sunan-ud-Daraqutni, Hadith 329]

Ikrimah reported that Abdullah ibn Abbas said: “The ablution of prayer consists of washing and wiping two areas.” [Tafsir-ut-Tabari, Volume 6, Page 175, Hadith 10507.]

Jabir reported that Abdullah ibn Ja’far said: “Wipe your head and feet!” [Tafsir-ut-Tabari, Vol. 6, page 175, Hadith 10512]

حدثنا ابن حميد، قال: ثنا هارون، عن عنبسة، عن جابر، عن أبي جعفر، قال: امسح على رأسك وقدميك

Sa’id reported that Qatadah was asked about His word: “O you who believe, when you stand for prayer, wash your face and your hands up to the elbows and wipe your heads and your feet up to the ankles.” – 5:6 – He said: “God made the ablution obligatory for two areas and the wiping obligatory for two.” [Tafsir-ut-Tabari, Vol. 6, page 176, Hadith 10520]

Abdullah Al-Warith reported that Humaid said: “Mujahid read: “(Wipe) your feet.” – 5:6 – [Tafsir-ut-Tabari, Volume 6, Page 177, Hadith 10522]

Jabir ibn Nuh reported that Isma’il ibn Abi Khalid said: “Amir Ash-Sha’bi used to read it as: “(Wipe) your feet.” – 5:6 – With the vowel Kasrah on the letter Lam.” [Tafsir-ut-Tabari, Vol. 6, page 177, Hadith 10523]

Hasan ibn Salih reported that Ghalib said: “Abdullah ibn Ja’far read: “(Wipe) your feet.” – 5:6 – [Tafsir-ut-Tabari, Volume 6, Page 177, Hadith 10524]

Waki’ reported that Salamah said: “Ad-Dahhak read: “(Wipe) your feet.” – 5:6 – With the vowel Kasrah.” [Tafsir-ut-Tabari, Vol. 6, page 177, Hadith 10525.]

حدثنا ابن وكيع، قال: ثنا أبي، عن سلمة، عن الضحاك، أنه قرأ: وأرجلِكم بالكسر

Isma’il Ibn Umar Ibn Kathir writes: “Those among the Shi’ites who make the wiping of the two feet as obligatory as the wiping of the shoe are astray and the most astray and so are those who permit both the wiping and the washing of the two, for they are also wrong. Abu Ja’far Ibn Jarir At-Tabari narrated that washing the two is obligatory.” [Tafsir Ibn Kathir, vol. 2, page 28]

قال إسماعيل بن عمر بن كثير: ومن أوجب من الشيعة مسحهما كما يمسح الخف، فقد ضل وأضل، وكذا من جوز مسحهما وجوز غسلهما، فقد أخطأ أيضاً، ومن نقل عن أبي جعفر بن جرير أنه أوجب غسلهما
