“If they had believed in God and the Prophet and what was revealed to him, they would not have taken them as close ones, but many of them are wrongdoers.” [Al-Ma’idah 5:81]

Harun ibn Muslim reported that Mas’adah ibn Sadaqah said: “Someone asked Abu Abdillah (As-Sadiq) about the people from the followers (Shi’ah) who associate themselves with the activities of the ruler, work for them, love them and take them as close ones. He said: ﴾They are not of the followers (Shi’ah), but they are of those.﴿ Then Abu Abdillah (a.) read this verse: ﴾Cursed were those who disbelieved from among the Children of Israel by the tongue of David and Jesus the son of Mary.﴿ (5:78) Until His statement: ﴾But many of them are wrongdoers.﴿ (5:81) He said: ﴾Swines by the tongue of David (a.) and apes by the tongue of Jesus the son of Mary (a.). They used not to forbid the reprehensible thing they did. Evil is that which they used to do.﴿ (5:79) He said: ﴾They ate the flesh of swine and they drank intoxicating liquors and they had intercourse with women during their monthly bleeding. Hereupon God sets forth His objection to the believers who take the disbelievers as their close ones: “You see many of them taking as their close ones, those who disbelieved. Bad is that which they themselves sent forth.” (5:80) Until His statement: “But many of them are wrongdoers.” (5:81) So God forbade the believer to take the disbeliever as a close one, except in the case of caution (Taqiyyah).﴿” [Al-Wasa’il of Al-Amili, Volume 17, Page 190 – 191, Hadith 10]

Al-Fadl reported that Imam Al-Kazim (a.) said: “If I had not heard the report of my grandfather, the Messenger of God (s.), that obedience to the ruler is fixed (wajib) out of cautiousness (taqiyyah), then I would not have fixed it.” [Al-Wasa’il of Al-Amili, Volume 16, Page 221, Hadith 3]

Hasan ibn Ali reported that Prophet Muhammad (a.) said: “The person with the most perfect mind is the one, who is most fearful of God and most obedient to Him and the person with the most deficient mind is the one who is most fearful of the ruler and most obedient to him.” [Tuhaf-ul-Uqul of Al-Harrani, page 50, Hadith 5]

Sulaiman Al-Ja’fari reported that he asked Imam Ar-Rida (a.): “What do you say about the activities of the ruler?” He said: “O Sulaiman, associating with their activities, supporting them and striving to fulfil their needs is equal to disbelief and to deliberately look up to them is among the great (sins) for which one deserves the Fire.” [Al-Mustadrak of An-Nuri, Vol. 11, page 456, Hadith 4]

Comment:

The ruler here refers to those, who are not given any authority by God to rule. Those who claim to be rulers without right from God are automatically deemed as Liars because the ultimate authority is only with God and those whom he delegates this power.
