Qur’an:

“When He covered you with weariness as a security from Him and sent down to you water from the sky to purify you therewith and to remove from you by it the stain of Satan and to make your hearts strong and to make firm your feet with it.” [Al-Anfal 8:11]

Sunnah:

Abu Al-Hasan Al-Qummi writes: “When Prophet Muhammad (s) was on the road and the night covered him, God inflicted weariness on his companions until they fell asleep. God caused the sky to come down upon them and Al-Walid came down to a place in which there was no foothold. Thereupon God caused the sky to come down upon them until their feet were firmly established on the ground and this is the verse: “When He covered you with weariness as a security from Him and sent down water from heaven to cleanse you with it and to remove from you by it the stain of Satan.” (8:11) This was because some companions of the Prophet (s.) had a wet dream: “And to strengthen your hearts and to make firm your feet with it.” The rain fell down pouring on the Quraish and sprinkled on the Companions of the Messenger (s.) to the extent, what the ground accomodated.” [Tafsir Al-Qummi, Vol. 1 page 261]

Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “Drink the water of the sky, for it purifies the body and removes the diseases, God said: “He sent down upon you the water from the sky to purify you with it and to remove from you by it the stain of Satan and to strengthen your hearts and to make firm your feet with it” (8:11) [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 6 page 387 – 388 Hadith 2]

Muhammad ibn Mas’ud reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said about the verse: “He removed the stain of Satan from you by it.” (8:11): “Nothing enters into us, which enters into people of doubts.” [Tafsir Al-Ayyashi, Volume 2 page 50 Hadith 27]

Ja’far ibn Muhammad reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: “As for the verse: “He sent down water for you from the sky.” (8:11) So in the deeper meaning, the sky is the Messenger (s.) and the water is the Commander of the believers, Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.). He created Ali (a.) from the Messenger (s.) and this is His statement: “He sent down water for you from the sky.” As for His statement: “To purify you with it.” (8:11) So this is Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.) through whom God purifies the heart of the one who turned to Him and this is His statement: “To purify you with it.” As for His statement: “And to remove from you the stain of Satan by it.” (8:11) Thus it means: “Whoever turned to Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.), from him God removed the stain and to him God has turned himself.” [Tafsir Al-Kufi, page 153 Hadith 190]

Jabir ibn Yazid reported that he asked Imam As-Sadiq (a.): “What is the deeper meaning of this verse: “He sent down upon you water from the sky to purify you with it and to remove from you the stain of Satan by it and strengthen your hearts and to make firm your feet?” (8:11) He said: “The sky in the deeper meaning is the Messenger (s.) and the water is Ali (a.). God created Ali (a.) from the Messenger (s.) and therefore He said: “Water to cleanse you with it.” That is Ali (a.) by whom God purifies the heart of that one who turned to Him and as for His saying: “And to remove from you the stain of Satan by it.” Thus He removes the stain from that one who turned to Ali (a.) and strengthens his heart: “And to strengthen your hearts with it and to make firm your feet with it.” By this is meant Ali (a.), whoever turned to Ali (a.), God strengthens his heart through Ali (a.) and makes him firm on his guardianship (Wilayah).” [Tafsir Al-Ayyahi, Volume 2 Page Page 50 Hadith 24]

Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: “A person becomes so angry that he is never satisfied and thus goes to Hell. Whichever person became angry while standing, let him sit down, for the stain of Satan will be removed from him and if he sits, let him stand up. Whichever person became angry with his relative, let him stand up and approach him and touch him, for if the relative touches the relative, then it calms him.” [Al-Amali of As-Saduq, page 420 Hadith 25]
