What is the place that is meant by the verse: “And We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign. And We gave them shelter on a mound with ground and spring water.” [Al-Mu’minun 23:50]

وجعلنا ابن مريم وأمه آية وآويناهما إلى ربوة ذات قرار ومعين

Response:

Sulaiman Ibn Nahik reported that Imam Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) mentioned His word: “And We gave them shelter on a mound with ground and spring water.” – 23:50 – He said: “The mound is the hill of Kufa and the spring water is the Euphrates.” [Tahdhib-ul-Ahkam of At-Tusi, Volume 6 page 38 Hadith 23]

أبو القاسم جعفر بن محمد عن علي بن الحسين بن موسى عن علي بن الحكم عن سليمان بن نهيك عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام في قوله عز وجل وآويناهما إلى ربوة ذات قرار ومعين قال الربوة نجف الكوفة والمعين الفرات

Ja’far Ibn Ibrahim reported that Imam Musa Al-Kazim (a.) asked a Nazarene: “Do you know the river, where Mary gave birth to Jesus (a.)?” The man replied: “No.” He said: “It is the Euphrates and by it are palm trees and vineyards. No place can be compared to the Euphrates in consideration of the vineyards and palm trees.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 1 Page 480 Hadith 4]

أحمد بن مهران وعلي بن إبراهيم جميعا، عن محمد بن علي، عن الحسن بن راشد، عن يعقوب بن جعفر بن إبراهيم أن أبا الحسن موسى عليه السلام سأل رجلا نصرانيا: والنهر الذي ولدت عليه مريم عيسى عليه السلام هل تعرفه؟ قال: لا، قال: هو الفرات وعليه شجر النخل والكرم وليس يساوي بالفرات شئ للكروم والنخيل
