“Say to the believing men, to lower their gazes and guard their private parts, that is purer for them. God is knowledgeable about what they do and speak to the believing women to lower their gazes and guard their private parts.” [An-Nur 24:30-31]

قل للمؤمنين يغضوا من أبصارهم ويحفظوا فروجهم ذلك أزكى لهم إن الله خبير بما يصنعون وقل للمؤمنات يغضضن من أبصارهن ويحفظن فروجهن

Abu Basir reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “Every verse, that mentions the private parts in the Qur’an, speaks about fornication, except this verse (24:30), because it speaks about looking. Therefore, a believing man is not allowed to look at the private parts of his sisters, nor is a woman allowed to look at the private parts of her brothers.” (24:31) [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 101, Page 33, Hadith 5]

عن علي بن إبراهيم عن أبيه عن محمد بن أبي عمير عن أبي بصير عن الإمام الصادق عليه السلام قال: كل آية في القرآن في ذكر الفروج فهو من الزنا إلا هذه الآية فإنها من النظر فلا يحل لرجل مؤمن أن ينظر إلى فرج أخته ولا يحل للمرأة أن ينظر إلى فرج أخيها

Jabir reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: “The Messenger of God (s.) cursed the man, who looks at the private parts of a woman, who is not lawful to him and the man, who cheats on his brother with his wife and the man, of whom people need the benefit, after which he demands a bribe from them.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Vol. 5, page 559, Hadith 14]

عنه، عن بعض العراقيين، عن محمد بن المثنى، عن أبيه، عن عثمان بن يزيد، عن جابر، عن أبي جعفر عليه السلام قال: لعن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله رجلا ينظر إلى فرج امرأة لا تحل له ورجلا خان أخاه في امرأته ورجلا يحتاج الناس إلى نفعه فسألهم الرشوة

Abu Amr Az-Zubairi reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “God made it obligatory with regard to the look, that one should not look at what God has forbidden and should turn away, from what God has forbidden of what is not permissible with Him and it is His way of acting and belongs to faith. Therefore, the Blessed and Exalted One said: “Say to the believing men to lower their gazes and guard their private parts.” (24:30), from looking at their nakedness (Awrah) and from a person looking at the private parts of his brother and him guarding his private parts from being looked at and He said: “Speak to the believing women to lower their gazes and guard their private parts.” (24:31), from one of them looking at the private parts of her sister and guarding her private parts from being looked at. Everything in the Qur’an about guarding one’s private parts speaks about fornication, except this verse, for it speaks about looking.” [Al-Burhan of Al-Bahrani, Vol. 5, page 377, Hadith 2]

عن محمد بن يعقوب عن علي بن إبراهيم عن أبيه عن بكر بن صالح عن القاسم بن يزيد عن أبي عمرو الزبيري عن الإمام الصادق عليه السلام قال: وفرض على البصر أن لا ينظر إلى ما حرم الله عليه وأن يعرض عما نهى الله عنه مما لا يحل له وهو عمله وهو من الايمان فقال تبارك وتعالى قل للمؤمنين يغضوا من أبصارهم ويحفظوا فروجهم أن ينظروا إلى عوراتهم وأن ينظر المرء إلى فرج أخيه ويحفظ فرجه أن ينظر إليه وقال قل للمؤمنات يغضضن من أبصارهن ويحفظن فروجهن من أن تنظر إحداهن إلى فرج أختها وتحفظ فرجها من أن ينظر إليه وقال: كل شئ في القرآن من حفظ الفرج فهو من الزنا الا هذه الآية فإنها من النظر

Sa’d Al-Iskaf reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: “A youth from the helpers (of the Prophet) met a woman in Medina and the women used to veil themselves up to behind their ears. As she approached, he looked towards her. As she passed, he looked towards her and entered into an alley called Sons of so and so. He looked at her and bumped his face on a prominence in the wall or a glass, so that he split his face open. When the woman had disappeared, he saw that blood was flowing on his chest and clothes. He said: “By God, I will go to the Messenger (s.) and report it to him.” So he went to the Messenger (s.) and when the Messenger (s.) saw him, he said: “What is this?” So he reported it to him, whereupon Gabriel (a.) came down with this verse: “Say to the believing men to lower their eyes and guard their private parts, that is purer for them. God is knowledgeable about what they do.” (24:30) Hadi An-Najafi writes: “The tradition is authentic (Mu’tabar) according to its chain.” [Mawsu’at-ul-Ahadith, Vol. 11, page 377, Hadith 14]

عن محمد بن يعقوب عن محمد بن يحيى، عن أحمد بن محمد عن علي بن الحكم عن سيف بن عميرة عن سعد الإسكاف عن أبي جعفر عليه السلام قال: استقبل شاب من الأنصار امرأة بالمدينة وكان النساء يتقنعن خلف آذانهن فنظر إليها وهي مقبلة فلما جازت نظر إليها ودخل في زقاق قد سماه ببني فلان فجعل ينظر خلفها واعترض وجهه عظم في الحائط أو زجاجة فشق وجهه فلما مضت المرأة نظر فإذا الدماء تسيل على صدره وثوبه فقال: والله لآتين رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ولأخبرنه، قال: فأتاه فلما رآه رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم قال له: ما هذا؟ فأخبره فهبط جبرئيل عليه السلام بهذه الآية قل للمؤمنين يغضوا من أبصارهم ويحفظوا فروجهم ذلك أزكى لهم إن الله خبير بما يصنعون. قال هادي النجفي: الرواية معتبرة الإسناد

Ali ibn Suwaid reported that he said to Imam Al-Kazim (a.): “I am tempted, to look at a beautiful woman, so that looking at her pleases me.” He said: “O Ali, there is no problem in that, as God knows your sincere intention, but beware of fornication, for it destroys the blessings and ruins the religion.” Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi writes: “Authentic (Sahih).” [Al-Kafi by Al-Kulaini, vol. 5, page 542, hadith 6; Mir’at-ul-Uqul by Al-Majlisi, vol. 20, page 387, hadith 6]

محمد بن يحيى عن أحمد بن محمد عن علي بن الحكم عن علي بن سويد قال قلت لأبي الحسن عليه السلام: إني مبتلي بالنظر إلى المرأة الجميلة فيعجبني النظر إليها فقال لي: يا علي لا بأس إذا عرف الله من نيتك الصدق وإياك والزنا فإنه يمحق البركة و يهلك الدين. قال محمد باقر المجلسي: صحيح

Sa’id Ibn Hibatillah reported that Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “Whoever looked at a woman which was forbidden (Haram) for him, God will fill his eyes with the fire.” Husain Ibn Muhammad reported that Imam Ali (s.) said: “May God curse the one who looks and the one who flaunts.” Nu’man Ibn Muhammad reported that Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “The first look is for you and the second look is against you and not for you and the third look is a poisoned arrow from the devil. Whoever refrained from it, for (the sake of) God, for no one except for Him, God makes him follow the belief (Iman), which he can taste.” [Mustadrak-ul-Wasa’il of An-Nuri, Vol. 14, page 269 – 271]

عن حسين بن محمد عن سعيد بن هبة الله عن الرسول صلى الله عليه وآله قال: من أصاب من امرأة نظرة حراما ملا الله عينه نارا وعن حسين بن محمد عن الإمام علي عليه السلام قال: لعن الله الناظر والمنظور إليه وعن النعمان بن محمد عن الرسول صلى الله عليه وآله قال: أول نظرة لك والثانية عليك ولا لك والنظرة الثالثة سهم مسموم من سهام إبليس من تركها لله لا لغيره أعقبه الله إيمانا يجد طعمه

Ali Ibn Musa reported that Jesus (a.) said: “You heard what was said to those who came before: “Do not commit fornication.” But I say to you: “Whoever looks at a woman, in such a way, that he desires her, has already committed fornication with her in his heart.” If your right eye betrays you, pluck it out and throw it away from you, for it is better for you, that you should destroy only one of your limbs, than that you should cast your whole body into the fire of hell and if your right hand causes you to fall into doubtfulness, cut it off and throw it away from you, for it is better for you, that you should destroy only one of your limbs, than that your whole body should go to hell.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Vol. 14, page 318.]

عن محمد بن محمد عن علي بن موسى رضي الله عنه عن عيسى عليه السلام قال: سمعتم ما قيل للأولين لا تزنوا وأنا أقول لكم إن من نظر إلى امرأة فاشتهاها فقد زنى بها في قلبه إن خانتك عينك اليمنى فاقلعها وألقها عنك، لأنه خير لك أن تهلك أحد أعضائك ولا تلقي جسدك كله في نار جهنم، وإن شككتك يدك اليمنى فاقطعها وألقها عنك فإنه خير لك أن تهلك أحد أعضائك من أن يذهب كل جسدك في جهنم
