Question:

Who is meant by these verses: “God has cursed the disbelievers and He has prepared for them a firebrand, in which they will dwell eternally and they will not find any friend or helper. On the day when their faces will be turned in the fire, they will say: “Oh, if only we had obeyed God and obeyed the messenger!” And they will say: “Our Lord, we obeyed our rulers and the noblemen among us, then they made us to go astray from the path. Our Lord, let them have a double punishment and curse them with a great curse.” [Al-Ahzab 33:64-68]

إن الله لعن الكافرين وأعد لهم سعيرا خالدين فيها أبدا لا يجدون وليا ولا نصيرا يوم تقلب وجوههم في النار يقولون يا ليتنا أطعنا الله وأطعنا الرسولا وقالوا ربنا إنا أطعنا سادتنا وكبراءنا فأضلونا السبيلا ربنا آتهم ضعفين من العذاب والعنهم لعنا كبيرا

Response:

Abu Al-Hasan Al-Qummi writes: “As for the verse: “On the day, their faces will be turned in the fire.” So it is an expression for those, who deprived their right of the family of Muhammad (s.) and they will say: “Oh, if only we had obeyed God and obeyed the Messenger!” (33:66) With regard to the Commander of the Believers (a.) and they will say: “Our Lord, we obeyed our rulers and the noblemen among us, then they made us to go astray from the path.” The two are the two men (Abu Bakr and Umar) and the rulers and the noblemen. The two were the first, who began with their oppression and deprivation of their rights. As for His statement: “Then they made us go astray from the path.” (33.67) So it is meant the path to Paradise and the path is the commander of the believers (a.). After that, they will say: ‘Our Lord, let them have a double punishment and curse them with a great curse.” (33:67) [Tafsir Al-Qummi, Volume 2 page 197]

قال الشيخ أبو الحسن القمي رحمه الله في قوله يوم تقلب وجوههم في النار فإنها كناية عن الذين غصبوا آل محمد حقهم يقولون يا ليتنا أطعنا الله وأطعنا الرسول يعني في أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام وقالوا ربنا إنا أطعنا سادتنا وكبراءنا فأضلونا السبيلا وهما رجلان (أبو بكر وعمر) والسادة والكبراء هما أول من بدأ بظلمهم وغصبهم وقوله فأضلونا السبيلا أي طريق الجنة، والسبيل أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام ثم يقولون ربنا آتهم ضعفين من العذاب والعنهم لعنا كبيرا
