Qur’an:

“God and His angels speak blessings over the Prophet. O you who believe, speak the blessings over him and greet him with proper greeting?” [Al-Ahzab 33:56]

إن الله وملائكته يصلون على النبي يا أيها الذين آمنوا صلوا عليه وسلموا تسليما

Sunnah:

Abu Al-Mughirah reported that he asked Imam Al-Kazim (a.): “What is meant by the blessing (salah) of God and His angels and the blessing of the believers?” He said: “The blessing of God is a mercy from Him, the blessing from His angels is a purification of themselves and the blessing of the believers is their supplication for him.” [Thawab-ul-A’mal of As-Saduq, page 156]

عن محمد بن علي عن علي بن موس عن سعد بن عبد الله عن أحمد بن محمد عن محمد عن أبي المغيرة عن موسى بن جعفر الكاظم عليه السلام قال قلت ما معنى صلاة الله وملائكته وصلاة المؤمنين؟ قال صلاة الله رحمة من الله وصلاة ملائكته تزكية منهم له وصلاة المؤمنين دعاء منهم له

Ahmad Ibn Ali reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “As for the verse: “God and His angels speak blessings over the Prophet.” (33:56) Thus, this verse has an outward and an inward meaning. The outward meaning is His statement: “Speak the blessing over him.” The inner meaning is His statement: “Greet him with proper greeting!” whose meaning is: “Submit yourselves, completely to the one whom he authorized and appointed as your successor and to the one, with whom he entered into a covenant.” [Al-Hada’iq-un-Nadirah by Yusuf Al-Bahrani, Volume 1 page 33]

عن أحمد بن علي عن أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام قال: وقوله إن الله وملائكته يصلون على النبي يا أيها الذين آمنوا صلوا عليه وسلم تسليما ولهذه الآية ظاهر وباطن. فالظاهر هو قوله: صلوا عليه والباطن سلموا تسليما أي سلموا لمن وصاه واستخلفه عليكم فضله وما عهد إليه تسليما

Shu’aib Ibn Al-Hakam reported that Ibn Abi Lailah said: “Ka’b Ibn Ujrah had met me and said: “Shall I not present you with a gift?” I said: “Yes, you do.” He said: “The Prophet Muhammad (s.) came out to us and we said: “O Messenger of God, how should one say the blessings over you?” He said: “Say: O God, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed Abraham and the family of Abraham. You are the One who is worthy of praise and glorification.” [Mustadrak-ul-Wasa’il of Al-Mirza An-Nuri, Volume 5 page 350 Hadith 12]

الشيخ شرف الدين النجفي في كنز الفوائد: نقلا عن تفسير محمد بن العباس، عن عبد العزيز بن يحيى، عن علي بن الجعد، عن شعيب بن الحكم قال: سمعت ابن أبي ليلى يقول: لقيني كعب بن عجرة فقال: الا أهدي إليك هدية؟ قلت: بلى، قال: إن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله، خرج الينا فقلت: يا رسول الله قد علمنا كيف السلام عليك، فكيف الصلاة عليك؟ قال: قولوا: اللهم صل على محمد وآل محمد، كما صليت على إبراهيم وآل إبراهيم إنك حميد مجيد، وبارك على محمد وآل محمد، كما باركت على إبراهيم وآل إبراهيم، انك حميد مجيد
