Question:

What is meant by the verse: “Say: I only remind you of one (thing), that you stand up for God by two or one and then reflect.” [Saba’ 34:46]

قل إنما أعظكم بواحدة أن تقوموا لله مثنى وفرادى ثم تتفكروا

Response:

Abu Hamzah reported that he asked Imam Muhammad Al-Baqir (a.) about the word of God: “I only remind you of one (thing).” (34:64) He said: “I remind you to closeness (Wilayah) to Ali (a.). It is the one, about which God says: “I only remind you of one.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulani, Volume 1 page 420 Hadith 41]

الحسين بن محمد، عن معلى بن محمد، عن الوشاء، عن محمد بن الفضيل، عن أبي حمزة قال: سألت أبا جعفر عليه السلام عن قول الله تعالى: قل إنما أعظكم بواحدة فقال: إنما أعظكم بولاية علي عليه السلام هي الواحدة التي قال الله تبارك وتعالى إنما أعظكم بواحدة

Umar ibn Yazid reported that he asked Imam Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) about the word of God: “I only remind you of one (thing).” (34:64) He said: “To closeness (Wilayah).” And His word: “That you stand up for God by two or one.” He said: “The Imams from their progeny.” [Tafsir Al-Kufi of Furat Ibn Ibrahim, page 346 Hadith 472]

فرات قال: حدثني جعفر بن محمد الفزاري معنعنا: عن عمر بن يزيد بياع السابري قال: سألت جعفر بن محمد عليهما السلام عن قول الله تعالى: قل إنما أعظكم بواحدة قال: بالولاية أن تقوموا لله مثنى وفرادى الأئمة من ذريتهما

Ya’qub Ibn Yazid reported that he asked Imam Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) about the word of God: “I only remind you of one (thing), that you stand up for God by two or one.” (34:64) He said: “To the closeness (Wilayah).” I said: “How did this happen?” He said: “When the Prophet Muhammad (s.) appointed the Commander of the Believers (a.) for the people and so he said: “Whose master I am, his master is Ali.” Whereupon a man mocked him and said: “Muhammad calls for a different matter every day and is already starting, to give the people of his house the kingship over our heads.” Therefore, God revealed the following in the Qur’an: “Say: I only remind you of one (thing). I have already directed you toward that which your Lord has made a duty for you.” I said: “What is meant by His word: “That you stand up for God by two or one?”” He said: “As for the two, it is meant the obedience to the Messenger (s.) and to the Commander of the Believers (a.) and as for the one, it is meant the obedience to the Imams (a.) after them from their progeny. No, by God, O Ya’qub, nothing else but this is meant by it!” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 23 page 391 Hadith 2]

محمد بن العباس عن أحمد بن محمد النوفلي عن يعقوب بن يزيد عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: سألته عن قول الله عز وجل: قل إنما أعظكم بواحدة أن تقوموا لله مثنى وفرادى قال: بالولاية، قلت: وكيف ذاك؟ قال. إنه لما نصب النبي صلى الله عليه وآله أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام للناس فقال: من كنت مولاه فعلي مولاه اغتابه رجل وقال إن محمدا ليدعو كل يوم إلى أمر جديد، وقد بدأ بأهل بيته يملكهم رقابنا، فأنزل الله عز وجل على نبيه صلى الله عليه وآله بذلك قرآنا فقال له: قل إنما أعظكم بواحدة فقد أديت إليكم ما افترض ربكم عليكم، قلت: فما معنى قوله عز وجل: أن تقوموا لله مثنى وفرادى فقال: أما مثنى، يعنى طاعة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وطاعة أمير المؤمنين، وأما فرادى فيعني طاعة الأئمة من ذريتهما من بعدهما ولا والله يا يعقوب ما عنى غير ذلك
