Question:

What is meant by the verses: “About what are they asking for? About the mighty news, over which they are in disagreement. No! They are going to know it. Again: No! They are going to know it.” [78:1-5]

عم يتساءلون عن النبإ العظيم الذي هم فيه مختلفون كلا سيعلمون ثم كلا سيعلمون

Al-Husain (a.) reported that Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “O Ali, you are the proof of God, you are the gate of God, you are the path to God, you are the mighty news, you are the straight path and you are the supreme example.” [Uyun-ul-Akhbar of As-Saduq, Volume 1 page 9 Hadith13]

حدثنا حمزة بن محمد بن أحمد بن جعفر بن محمد بن زيد بن علي بن الحسين بن علي بن أبي طالب عليه السلام بقم في رجب سنة تسع وثلثين وثلاثمأة قال حدثني أبي عن ياسر الخادم عن أبي الحسن علي بن موسى الرضا عن أبيه عن آبائه عن الحسين بن علي عليهم السلام قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم لعلي عليه السلام يا علي أنت حجة الله وأنت باب الله وأنت الطريق إلى الله وأنت النبأ العظيم وأنت الصراط المستقيم وأنت المثل الاعلى

Abu Hamzah reported that he told Imam Al-Baqir (a.): “The followers ask you about the explanation of this verse: “About what are they asking for? About the mighty news.” (78:1-2) He said: “If you like, I will report it to them and if you like, I will not report it to them.” Then he said: “But I will report its explanation to you.” I said: ” About what are they asking for?” He said: “It was revealed on account of the Commander of the Believers (a.) and he used to say it: “Neither does God have a greater sign than me nor does God have a more mighty proclamation than me.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 1 page 207 Hadith 3]

محمد بن يحيى، عن أحمد بن محمد، عن محمد بن أبي عمير، أو غيره، عن محمد بن الفضيل، عن أبي حمزة، عن أبي جعفر عليه السلام قال: قلت له: جعلت فداك إن الشيعة يسألونك عن تفسير هذه الآية عم يتساءلون عن النبأ العظيم قال: ذلك إلي إن شئت أخبرتهم وإن شئت لم اخبرهم، ثم قال: لكني أخبرك بتفسيرها، قلت: عم يتساءلون؟ قال: فقال: هي في أمير المؤمنين صلوات الله عليه، كان أمير المؤمنين صلوات الله عليه يقول: ما لله عز وجل آية هي أكبر مني ولا لله من نبأ أعظم مني

Al-Husain Ibn Khalid reported that Imam Ar-Rida (a.) mentioned the verse: “About what are they asking for? About the mighty news.” (78:1-2) He said: “The Commander of the Believers (a.) said: ‘Neither does God have a more mightier proclamation than me, nor does God have a greater sign than me.” He showed my advantage on the former communities over the disagreement of their tongues, but they did not admit my advantage to me.” [Tafsir Al-Qummi, Vol. 2 page 401]

قال: حدثني أبي عن الحسين بن خالد عن أبي الحسن الرضا عليه الصلاة والسلام في قوله عم يتساءلون إلى آخره قال: قال أمير المؤمنين عليه الصلاة والسلام: ما لله نبأ أعظم مني وما لله آية أكبر مني، وقد عرض فضلي على الأمم الماضية على اختلاف ألسنتها فلم تقر بفضلي

Abdullah ibn Kathir reported that he asked Imam As-Sadiq (a.) about the verse: “About what are they asking for? About the mighty news.” (78:1-2) He said: “The mighty news is the guardianship (Wilayah).” I asked him about His word: “There the guardianship belongs to God, Who is the Truth.” (18:44) He said: “It is the guardianship (Wilayah) of the Commander of the believers (a.).” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 1 page 418 Hadith 34]

الحسين بن محمد، عن معلى بن محمد، عن محمد بن أورمة، ومحمد بن عبد الله، عن علي بن حسان، عن عبد الله بن كثير، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام في قوله تعالى: عم يتساءلون عن النباء العظيم قال: النبأ العظيم الولاية، وسألته عن قوله هنالك الولاية لله الحق  قال: ولاية أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام

Evidence:

Abd Khair reported that Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.) said: “Sakhr Ibn Harb (Abu Sufyan) had arrived, so he sat down with Prophet Muhammad (s.) and said: “To who does the authority belong to after you?” He said: “It is for him, whose position with me is that which Aaron had with Moses.” Therefore, God revealed the verse: “About what do they ask you for?” (78:1) By which is meant: “The people of Mecca question you about the successorship of Ali.” And: ” About the mighty news, over which they are in disagreement.” (78:2-3) Some of them acknowledged the leadership and others of them denied it: “No! They are going to know it. Again, no! They are going to know it.” (78:4-5) It is an answer to them so that they may realize that his successorship is lawful. When they are questioned about it in their graves, neither a deceased in the east nor in the west nor on the land nor on the water will remain without the angels Munkar and Nakir questioning him and saying to the deceased: “Who is your Lord? To what faith do you belong? Who is your prophet? Who is your Imam?” [Shawahid-ut-Tanzil by Al-Hakim Al-Haskani, Volume 2 page 418 Hadith 1075]

وأخبرنا عقيل بن الحسين حدثنا علي بن الحسين حدثنا محمد بن عبيد الله حدثنا أبو بكر الآجري بمكة حدثنا موسى بن إبراهيم الخوري حدثنا يوسف بن موسى القطان، عن وكيع، عن سفيان عن السدي، عن عبد خير عن علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه قال: أقبل صخر بن حرب حتى جلس إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله فقال: الامر بعدك لمن؟ قال لمن هو مني بمنزلة هارون من موسى. فأنزل الله عم يتساءلون يعني يسألك أهل مكة عن خلافة علي عن النبأ العظيم الذي هم فيه مختلفون فمنهم المصدق ومنهم المكذب بولايته كلا سيعلمون، ثم كلا سيعلمون وهو رد عليهم سيعرفون خلافته أنها حق إذ يسألون عنها في قبورهم فلا يبقى منهم ميت في شرق ولا غرب ولا بر ولا بحر إلا ومنكر ونكير يسألانه يقولان للميت: من ربك وما دينك ومن نبيك ومن إمامك

Aban Ibn Taghlib reported that Muhammad Al-Baqir (a.) mentioned the verse: “About the mighty news.” (78:2) He said: “The mighty news is Ali (a.) and about him they have disagreed, for in the Messenger of God (s.) there is no disagreement.” [Shawahid-ut-Tanzil of Al-Hakim Al-Haskani, Volume 2 page 417 – 418 Hadith 1074]
