What is meant by the abundance (Kawthar) in the 108th chapter of the Qur’an?

Abu Al-Hasan Al-Qummi writes: “In the name of the Gracious and Merciful God: we gave you the abundance.” (108:1) He said: “The abundance (Kawthar) is a river in Paradise, which God gave to Muhammad as compensation for his son Ibrahim.” [Tafsir Al-Qummi, Vol. 2 page 445]

قال أبو الحسن القمي: بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم إنا أعطيناك الكوثر قال الكوثر نهر في الجنة اعطى الله محمدا عوضا عن ابنه إبراهيم

Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.) reported that Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “Gabriel showed me my position and the position of the people of my house at the abundance (Kawthar).” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 8 Page 26 Hadith 25]

ويؤيده ما رواه أيضا عن أحمد بن محمد، عن حصين بن مخارق، عن عمرو بن خالد، عن زيد بن علي، عن أبيه، عن علي عليه السلام قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله: أراني جبرئيل منازلي ومنازل أهل بيتي على الكوثر

Ubaid ibn Kathir reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: “When God revealed for His Prophet Muhammad (s.) and the people of his Household (a.) the verse: “We gave you the abundance.” (108:1), the Commander of the Believers, Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.) said: “O Messenger, God honored and appreciated this river. Will you describe it to us?” He said: “Yes, O Ali, the abundance (Kawthar) is a river that God makes flow under His Throne. The water in it is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey and softer than butter. Its pebbles are pearls, precious stones and coral. Its earth is strong-smelling perfume (misk) and its grasses are saffron. It flows under the supports of the throne of the Lord of the Worlds. Its fruits resemble vines of green jewels, red gems and white pearls. Its interior is clearly distinguished from its exterior and its exterior is clearly distinguished from its interior.” Therefore, the Prophet (s.) wept with his companions and thereupon he tapped his hand on the Commander of the Believers, Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.) and said: “O Ali, by God, it (kawthar) does not belong to me alone, but it belongs to me and to you and to your lovers after me.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 8 page 27 Hadith 29]

عبيد بن كثير معنعنا عن أبي جعفر عليه السلام قال: لما أنزل الله تعالى على نبيه محمد صلى الله عليه وآله وأهل بيته عليهم السلام إنا أعطيناك الكوثر قال أميرالمؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب عليه السلام: يا رسول الله لقد شرف الله هذا النهر وكرمه فانعته لنا, قال نعم يا علي, الكوثر نهر يجري الله من تحت عرشه ماؤه أبيض من اللبن, وأحلى من العسل, وألين من الزبد, حصباه الدر والياقوت والمرجان, ترابه المسك الاذفر, حشيشه الزعفران, تجري من تحت قوائم عرش رب العالمين, ثمرة كأمثال القلال من الزبرجد الاخضر والياقوت الاحمر والدر الابيض, يستبين ظاهره من باطنه, و باطنه من ظاهره فبكى النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وأصحابه ثم ضرب بيده إلى أميرالمؤمنين علي ابن أبي طالب عليه السلام فقال: يا علي والله ما هو لي وحدي, وإنما هو لي ولك والمجيك من بعدي

Ikrima reported that he asked Abdullah ibn Abbas about the verse: “We gave you the abundance.” (108:1) He said: “There is a river in Paradise and its depth into the ground is 70,000 farsakh. The water in it is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey and its banks are made of pearls and precious stones. God distinguished therewith His Prophet and the people of his Household (a.) above all prophets.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 8 Page 25 Hadith 25]

كنز: محمد بن العباس، عن أحمد بن سعيد العماري، عن إسماعيل بن زكريا، عن محمد بن عون، عن عكرمة، عن ابن عباس في قوله تعالى: إنا أعطيناك الكوثر قال: نهر في الجنة عمقه في الارض سبعون ألف فرسخ، ماؤه أشد بياضا من اللبن، وأحلى من العسل، شاطئاه من اللؤلؤ والزبر جدوالياقوت، خص الله بن نبيه وأهل بيته عليهم السلام دون الانبياء

Abdullah Ibn Umar reported that Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “Whoever loves Ali, he will not leave this world until he drinks from the abundance (Kawthar) and eats from the tree of bliss (Tuba) and sees his place in Paradise.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 65 Page 125 Hadith 53]

بشارة المصطفى: عن محمد بن عبد الوهاب الرازي، عن محمد بن أحمد بن الحسين النيسابوري، عن عقيل بن الحسين العلوي، عن الحسن بن العباس الكرماني عن علي بن إسماعيل العبدي، عن دحية بن الحسن، عن محمد بن عبد الله البلخي عن قتيبة بن سعيد، عن حماد بن زيد، عن عبد الرحمان السراج، عن نافع عن عبد الله بن عمر عن النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم أنه قال: ألا ومن أحب عليا لا يخرج من الدنيا حتى يشرب من الكوثر، ويأكل من شجرة طوبى ويرى مكانه من الجنة

Humran ibn A’yan reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “Prophet Muhammad (s.) performed the prayer in the early morning. Thereupon he looked at Ali (a.) and said: “O Ali, what is this light that I see you being surrounded by?” He said: “O Messenger of God, ritual impurity (Janabah) overtook me that night and I grabbed the ground of the valley and it was not hit by any water. Then as I went on, a caller called out to me: “O Commander of the Believers!” Whereupon I turned around and there was a jug full of water behind me, with which I performed the full body ablution (Ghusl).” The Messenger (s.) said: “O Ali, as for the one calling, it is Gabriel (a.) and the water is from a river called the Abundance (Kawthar). There are 12,000 trees by it and each tree has 360 branches. When the inhabitants of Paradise want to rejoice, a fragrance comes out so that there is neither a tree nor a branch except that it makes a sweeter sound than the other and if God had not prescribed that the inhabitants of Paradise would not die, they would die for the joy of the strong sweetness of these sounds. This river is in the Garden of Eden and it belongs to me and to you and Fatimah and Al-Hasan and Al-Husain and no one else owns any of it.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 8 page 26 Hadith 27]

وروى أيضا عن أحمد بن هوذة عن إبراهيم بن إسحاق، عن عبد الله بن حماد عن حمران بن أعين، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: إن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله صلى الغداة ثم التفت إلى علي عليه السلام فقال: يا علي ما هذا النور الذي أراه قد غشيك؟ قال: يا رسول الله أصابتني جنابة في هذه الليلة فأخذت بطن الوادي ولم أصب الماء فلما وليت ناداني مناد: يا أمير المؤمنين فالتفت فإذا خلفي إبريق مملوء من ماء فاغتسلت، فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله: يا علي أما المنادي فجبرئيل، والماء من نهر يقال له: الكوثر عليه اثنا عشر ألف شجرة، كل شجرة لها ثلاث مائة وستون غصنا فإذا أراد أهل الجنة الطرب هبت ريح فما من شجرة ولا غصن إلا وهو أحلى صوتا من الآخر، ولولا أن الله تعالى كتب على أهل الجنة أن لا يموتوا لماتوا فرحا من شدة حلاوة تلك الأصوات، وهذا النهر في جنة عدن، وهو لي ولك ولفاطمة والحسن والحسين، وليس لاحد فيه شئ
