Question:

Did the Prophet (s.) predict that Ali (a.) would be betrayed by his community?

Asma’ Bint Umais reported that Fatimah (a.) said: “Angel Gabriel (a.) came down and said: ‘O Muhammad, the Exalted One sends you the greetings of peace and says: “The position of Ali with you is the position, that Aaron had with Moses, but no one is a prophet after you.” [Uyun-ul-Akhbar of As-Saduq, Volume 1 page 28 Hadith 5]

عن علي بن موسى عن موسى بن جعفر عن جعفر بن محمد عن محمد بن علي عن علي بن الحسين عليهم السلام عن أسماء بنت عميس رضي الله عنها عن فاطمة عليها السلام قالت: هبط جبرائيل فقال يا محمد العلي الاعلى يقرئك السلام ويقول علي منك بمنزلة هارون من موسى ولا نبي بعدك

Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.) reported that Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “By Him Who sent me as a prophet and a proclaimer with the truth, my congregation will follow the Sunnah of those, who preceded them, just like one shoe is like another, to the point that if a snake from the Children of Israel crawled into a hole, just like that a snake will crawl in this congregation.” [Kamal-ud-Din of As-Saduq, page 576 Hadith 3]

حدثنا أحمد بن الحسن القطان قال: حدثنا الحسن بن علي السكري قال: حدثنا محمد بن زكريا، عن جعفر بن محمد بن عمارة، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد، عن أبيه، عن جده عليهم السلام قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله: والذي بعثني بالحق نبيا وبشيرا لتركبن أمتي سنن من كان قبلها حذو النعل بالنعل حتى لو أن حية من بني إسرائيل دخلت في جحر لدخلت في هذه الأمة حية مثلها

Tha’labah Ibn Yazid Al-Himmani reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: ,,Among what the Prophet Muhammad (s.) promised me is his statement: ,,The congregation will betray you after me.” [Ash-Shafi Fi Al-Imamah by Ash-Sharif Al-Murtada, page 225]

وروى إبراهيم الثقفي عن يحيى بن عبد الحميد الحماني عن عمرو ابن حريث عن حبيب بن أبي ثابت عن ثعلبة بن يزيد الحماني عن علي عليه السلام قال سمعته يقول: كان فيما عهد إلي النبي صلى الله عليه وآله الأمي أن الأمة ستغدر بك من بعدي

Abdullah Ibn Abbas reported that Prophet Muhammad (s.) said to Ali (a.): “Your position with me is that which Aaron had with Moses, except that you are not a prophet. It is not befitting for me, to pass away, without you being my successor from every believer after me.” Muhammad Nasir-ud-Din Al-Albani writes: “The tradition is good according to its chain (Hasan) and its transmitters are trustworthy (Thiqat).” [Kitab As-Sunnah by Ibn Abi Asim, Hadith 986; Zilal-ul-Jannah by Al-Albani, Hadith 1188]

ثنا محمد بن المثنى, حدثنا يحيى بن حماد, عن أبي عوانة, عن يحيى بن سليم أبي بلج, عن عمرو بن ميمون, عن ابن عباس, قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لعلي: أنت مني بمنزلة هارون من موسى, إلا أنك لست نبيا, إنه لا ينبغي أن أذهب إلا وأنت خليفتي في كل مؤمن من بعدي. قال محمد ناصر الدين الألباني: إسناده حسن ورجاله ثقات

Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri reported that Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “You will follow the Sunnah of the Children of Israel span by span and cubit by cubit, until if a man from the Children of Israel crawled into the hole of a lizard, you will follow him just like that in it.” [Al-Musnad by Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Hadith 11487.]

حدثنا عبد الرزاق أخبرنا معمر عن زيد بن أسلم عن رجل عن أبي سعيد الخدري قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لتتبعن سنن بني إسرائيل شبرا بشبر وذراعا بذراع حتى لو دخل رجل من بني إسرائيل جحر ضب لتبعتموهم فيه وقال مرة لتبعتموه فيه

Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.) reported that Prophet Muhammad (s.) said to him: “The community will betray you after me and you live by my religion and they kill you on my Sunnah. Whoever loves you loves me and whoever is angry with you is angry with me. This one will be colored (by which is meant his beard from his head).” Al-Hakim An-Naisaburi writes: “Authentic (Sahih).” Muhammad Ibn Ahmad Adh-Dhahabi writes: “Authentic (Sahih).” [Al-Mustadrak Ala As-Sahihain, Hadith 4686]

عن حيان الأسدي سمعت عليا يقول : قال لي رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم إن الأمة ستغدر بك بعدي وأنت تعيش على ملتي وتقتل على سنتي من أحبك أحبني ومن أبغضك أبغضني و إن هذه ستخضب من هذا يعني لحيته من رأسه. قال الحاكم النيسابوري: صحيح وقال محمد بن أحمد الذهبي: صحيح
