Thabit Ibn Hurmuz reported, that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said:,,There is no one who sleeps, except that his soul (nafs) is lifted up to the sky while his spirit (Ruh) remains in his body and between the two of them there is a relationship like the rays of the sun. When God gives permission to take the spirits, the spirit and the soul answer and when God gives permission for the spirit to respond, the soul and the spirit answer and this is His word: ﴾God calls away the souls at their death and those, who did not die, during their sleep.﴿ (39:42) Whatever they saw in the realm of the heavens, there is an interpretation for that and whatever they saw between the heavens and the earth then that is from satan and there is no interpretation for that.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Vol. 58, Page 27]
Abu t-Tufail reported that Al-Hasan (a.) said after the death of his father (a.): ,,O you people, you have been left by someone whom neither the first preceded nor the last caught up with. The Messenger of God (s.) handed him the flag, after which Gabriel fought on his right and Michael on his left. So he did not return until God brought victory through him and God caused him to die, in the night in which the representative of Moses died and his spirit was lifted up, in the night in which the spirit (Ruh) of Jesus son of Mary was lifted up.” [Al-Ghadir of Al-Amini, Volume 2, Page 308, Hadith 7]
Muhammad Ibn Ali As-Saduq writes: ,,Except for the matter of Jesus (a.), the son of Mary (a.), no matter of any of the prophets of God and His proofs to the people remained unclear, for he was lifted alive from the earth and his spirit (Ruh) was taken from him between heaven and earth. Then he was lifted up to heaven and his spirit returned to him and this is the word of God: ﴾When God said: ,,O Jesus, I will cause you to die and lift you up to Me.”﴿ (3:55) And God said as a report of what Jesus (a. ) says on the Day of Resurrection: ﴾I was a witness over them while I was among them, but when You caused me to die, You were the guardian over them and You are a witness over all.﴿” (5:117) [Al-Khisal, page 529]
Ali Ibn Isa Al-Irbili writes: ,,The people of his household (the Prophet) and his companions disagreed about his burial. Then Ali (a.) said: ﴾God took the spirit (Ruh) of His Prophet only in the purest place and he shall be buried where he died.﴿ So they kept his word.” [Kashf-ul-Ghummah, Volume 1, page 19]
Muhammad ibn Ali reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: ,,When the spirit (Ruh) is taken, it remains over the body. The spirit of a believer and of others. He sees everything that is done to him. Then, when you wrap him in the shroud and put him on the stretcher and you carry him at the necks of the people, the spirit returns to him. Thus it goes into him, whereupon wide vision is given to him. There he sees his place in the paradise or in the fire. When he is one of the people of paradise, he shouts with his loudest voice: ﴾Hurry up with me. Hurry up with me.﴿ But if he belongs to the people of fire: ﴾Bring me back. Bring me back.﴿ While he is aware of everything that is done to him and hears the talking.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 58, Page 50, Hadith 28]
Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) reported that Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: ,,When God wants to take the spirit (Ruh) of a believer, He says: ﴾O angel of death, go you and your helpers to My servant, for he has struggled for long for My sake. So bring Me his spirit, so that I may let him rest with Me.﴿ So the angel of death appears to him with a beautiful face and pure robe and fragrant fragrance. So he stands at the door and does not ask permission from a doorkeeper, nor does he tear a curtain, nor does he break open a door. With him are five hundred angels. Helpers who have with them a bouquet of basil, white silk and intensely fragrant musk. Thus they say: ﴾Peace be with you, O near one of God. Be of good cheer, for the Lord directs peace to you. Behold, He is well pleased with you. He is not angry. Look forward unto refreshment, basil and a paradise of delight.﴿” [Al-Ikhtisas of Al-Mufid, page 345]
Sulaiman Ad-Dailami reported that Sadir As-Sairafi said: ,,I said to Abu Abdillah (As-Sadiq): ﴾My life be sacrificed to you, O son of the Messenger of God. Is the believer’s spirit (Ruh) taken away with force?﴿ He said: ﴾No, by God. When the angel of death appears to him to take away his spirit, he becomes sad. Thus, the angel of death says to him: ,,O near one of God, do not be sad, for by Him who sent Muhammad (s.), we are kinder and more merciful to you than a merciful father if he were with you. Open your eyes. So look now.﴿ He said: ﴾Then the Messenger of God (s.), the Commander of the Faithful, Fatimah, Hasan, Husain, and the Imams (a.) from their progeny appear to him. So they say to him: ,,These are the Messenger of God, the Commander of the Faithful, Fatimah, Hasan, Husain, and the Imams, your companions.”﴿ He said: ﴾So he opens his eyes, whereupon a caller from the venerable Lord calls out to his spirit. Then he says: ﴾O soul who finds rest with Muhammad and the people of his house, return to your Lord satisfied with leadership and pleased with reward. So enter among My servants, Muhammad as well as the people of his house and enter My Paradise.” (89:27-30) Thus, there is nothing that is dearer to him than the deprivation of his spirit (Ruh) and joining the caller.﴿” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 6, Page 196, Hadith 49]
Comment:
Muhammad, Ali and Jesus were deprived of the spirit (Ruh) and not the soul (Nafs) in sleep. The two must be distinguished. Al-Hurr Al-Amili correctly described the interpretations in the case of Jesus as absurd and false [Here]
