God commanded the temporary marriage

Question:

Some innovators argue that the marriage of time is a pre-Islamic custom of idolaters. Like alcohol, it was first permitted and then forbidden, and thus not by God. Does this correspond to the facts?

Answer:
In the Qur’an it says:

“He who obeys the messenger obeys God.” [An-Nisa’ 4:80]

من يطع الرسول فقد أطاع الله

Say: “God does not order the shameful.” [Al-A’raf 7:28]

قل إن الله لا يأمر بالفحشاء

Abu Rabi’ Ibn Sabrah reported that Sabrah Ibn Ma’bad said: “God’s prophet (s.) ordered his companions, in the year of the conquest of Mecca, to marry the women for a limited time.” [Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1406]

وحدثنا يحيى بن يحيى أخبرنا عبد العزيز بن الربيع بن سبرة بن معبد قال سمعت أبي ربيع بن سبرة يحدث عن أبيه سبرة بن معبد أن نبي الله صلى الله عليه وسلم عام فتح مكة أمر أصحابه بالتمتع من النساء

Abu Nadrah reported that he read this verse in the presence of Abdullah Ibn Abbas: “To those among you who have enjoyed.” (4:24) Abdullah Ibn Abbas said:”For a limited time.” I said: “I have not read it this way! He said: “By God, it has been sent down just like this three times!” [Tafsir At-Tabari, vol. 8 page 177 Hadith 9038]

حدثنا ابن المثنى، قال: ثنا محمد بن جعفر، قال: ثنا شعبة، عن أبي سلمة، عن أبي نضرة، قال: قرأت هذه الآية على ابن عباس: فما استمتعتم به منهن قال ابن عباس إلى أجل مسمى قال قلت ما أقرؤها كذلك قال: والله لأنزلها الله كذلك ثلاث مرات

Isma’il Ibn Qais reported that Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud said: “We used to take part in the campaigns with God’s messengers (s.) and we had no women with us. So we said: “Shall we not castrate ourselves? But he forbade us to do so. So he allowed us to marry the woman for a limited time for a cloak (as a bridal gift).” Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud then read the verse: “O believers! Do not forbid the good things which God has allowed you to do, and do not transgress His rules, for God does not love those who transgress His commandments! (5:87) [Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1404]

حدثنا محمد بن عبد الله بن نمير الهمداني حدثنا أبي ووكيع وابن بشر عن إسمعيل عن قيس قال سمعت عبد الله يقول كنا نغزو مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ليس لنا نساء فقلنا ألا نستخصي فنهانا عن ذلك ثم رخص لنا أن ننكح المرأة بالثوب إلى أجل ثم قرأ عبد الله يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تحرموا طيبات ما أحل الله لكم ولا تعتدوا إن الله لا يحب المعتدين

Ahmad Ibn Taymiyyah says: “Temporary marriage does not contradict either the natural disposition (Fitrah) or the mind (Aql). If it would contradict these, then it would not have been allowed by Islam at that time.” [Ighathat-ul-Lahafan, pg. 492]
