Can one teach the women to write?

Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “Do not bring the women down into the rooms and do not teach them how to write. Teach them about the spinning wheel and the chapter An-Nur.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 5 Page 516 Hadith 1]

علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن النوفلي، عن السكوني، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله: لا تنزلوا النساء بالغرف ولا تعلموهن الكتابة وعلموهن المغزل وسورة النور

Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “Do not bring your women down to the rooms and do not teach them how to write and do not teach them the chapter Yusuf. Teach them about the spinning wheel and the chapter An-Nur.” [Man La Yahduruh-ul-Faqih of As-Saduq, Volume 3 Page 442 Hadith 4535]

وروى إسماعيل بن أبي زياد عن جعفر بن محمد عن أبيه عليهما السلام عن آبائه عليهم السلام قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله: لا تنزلوا نساءكم الغرف ولا تعلموهن الكتابة، ولا تعلموهن سورة يوسف، وعلموهن المغزل وسورة النور

Muhammad Ibn Ishaq reported that Imam Al-Jawad (a.) said: “Fatimah (a.) remained alive six months after the Messenger of God (s.), and Fatimah (a.) wrote this book: “In the name of the gracious and merciful God, this is what Fatimah, the daughter of Muhammad, wrote with regard to property. If anything should happen to her, then she will leave 80 units by weight of her fruit crop as a donation for the needy, which are harvested every year in the month of Rajab.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 100, page 184 – 185 Hadith 13]

قال محمد بن إسحاق: وحدثني أبو جعفر محمد بن علي أن فاطمة عاشت بعد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله ستة أشهر قال: وإن فاطمة بنت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله كتبت هذا الكتاب: بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم هذا ما كتبت فاطمة بنت محمد في مالها إن حدث بها حادث تصدقت بثمانين أوقية تنفق عنها من ثمارها التي لها كل عام في كل رجب

Aishah reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “Do not bring the women down into the rooms and do not teach them how to write. Teach them about the spinning-wheel and the chapter An-Nur.” Al-Hakim An-Naisaburi writes: “The tradition is authentic according to its chain (Sahih) and the two (Al-Bukhari and Muslim) have not published it”. [Al-Mustadrak Ala As-Sahihain of Al-Hakim, Hadith 3453]

حدثنا أبو علي الحافظ, أنبأ محمد بن محمد بن سليمان, ثنا عبد الوهاب بن الضحاك, ثنا شعيب بن إسحاق, عن هشام بن عروة, عن أبيه, عن عائشة رضي الله عنها, قالت: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: لا تنزلوهن الغرف ولا تعلموهن الكتابة يعني النساء وعلموهن المغزل وسورة النور. قال الحاكم النيسابوري: هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد ولم يخرجاه

Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “Do not let your wives dwell in the rooms and do not teach them how to write.” Ibn Hajar Al-Haitami writes: “Authentic (Sahih).” [Al-Fatawa Al-Hadithiyyah of Al-Haitami, Volume 1, page 193]

حماد بن سلمة عن الزبير بن عبد السلام, عن أيوب بن عبد الله الفهري, عن عبد الله بن مسعود قال: قال رسول الله – صلى الله عليه وسلم: لا تسكنوا نساءكم الغرف, ولا تعلموهن الكتابة. قال ابن حجر الهيثمي: هو صحيح

Abdullah Ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “Do not teach your wives how to write and do not let them live in the rooms of the upper floors.” [Lisan-ul-Mizan by Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani, Volume 2, page 131]

فأنبأنا أبو القاسم بن السمرقندي, أنبأنا إسماعيل بن مسعدة, أنبأنا حمزة بن يوسف, أنبأنا أبو أحمد بن عدي, حدثنا جعفر بن سهل, حدثنا جعفر بن نصر حدثنا حفص حدثنا عن مجاهد عن ابن عباس عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: لا تعلموا نساءكم الكتابة, ولا تسكنوهن الغرف العلالي

Muhammad Ibn Ahmad Al-Qurtubi writes: “Learning to write can be a reason for seduction (Fitnah). When she (the woman) learns to write, she writes to her lover.” [Al-Jami’ Li-Ahkam Al-Qur’an, Volume 20 Page 109]
