Qur’an:

“Among men there are those who say: We believe in God and in the Last Day.” But yet they are not believers?” [Al-Baqarah 2:8]

Hadith:

Hasan Al-Askari (a.) reported that Imam Al-Kazim (a.) said: “On the day of Ghadir, the Prophet Muhammad (s.) left the commander of the believers (a.) in his famous and well-known place. Then he said: “O servants of God, name my family tree!” They said: “You are Muhammad, the son of Abdullah, the son of Abd-ul-Muttalib, the son of Hashim, the son of Abd Manaf.” Then he said: “O people, am I not closer to you than you are to yourselves? Am I your nearest and dearest, closer to you than you are to yourselves?” They said: “Yes, O messenger of God.” He then looked towards the heaven and said: “God, be witness that they have said it and they are saying it.” He repeated it three times and then said: “To whom I am near and dearest, this one is near and dearest. God, be close to the one who is close to him and stand against the one who stood against him and give support to the one who supported him and let the one that left him fall!” Then he said: “Arise, O Abu Bakr, and take the oath of allegiance to him that he is the owner of the authority over the believers!” So he did, and took the oath of allegiance to him. Then he said: “Arise, O Umar, and take the oath of allegiance to him that he is the owner of the authority over the believers!” So he did and swore an oath of allegiance to him. Then he said the same thing to complete the Nine and then he told the heads of the emigrants and helpers so that they all took the oath of allegiance. After that Umar Ibn Al-Khattab stood up from their group and said: “For the good, for the good, O son of Abu Talib! You have become the closest to me and to every believing man and woman.” And then they separated when the agreements and covenants were made with them. Afterwards, a group of their apostates and violent men conspired among themselves: “If Muhammad is dead, then we will snatch this authority from Ali and not leave it to him.” But God knew this about them. They used to come to the Messenger (s.) and say: “You have appointed Ali as the leader who is loved the most by God and you and us among all the creatures and who protects us from any injustice towards us and the tyrants with regard to our custody. But God knew in their hearts the opposite was true, in that they stood by each other and had enmity and wanted to deprive him of his right to that authority. Then God informed Muhammad about them and said: “O Muhammad, there are some among men who say: “We believe in God, Who commanded you to appoint Ali as Imam, leader and head of your community. (2:8) But yet they are not believers in it, but are plotting your death and his as well, and as soon as you pass away, their souls are in apostasy towards Ali.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 37 Page 141 – 143 Hadith 36]

Ali Ibn Suwaid reported that Imam Al-Kazim (a.) said: “You questioned me about the two men (Abu Bakr and Umar). Both snatched from a man his possessions, which he gave to the poor and needy and travelers on the path of God. When they had both snatched it from him, they were not satisfied with their dispossession until they forced him to take it to their homes, and they continued the matter until they had squandered it in the highest degree. How much have they thereby increased in disbelief? By my life, the two of them had already fallen into hypocrisy before, and they were hostile to the Word of God, and they mocked His Messenger (s.). Both are disbelievers, God, the angels and every man curse them! By God, nothing of belief penetrated into their hearts. They were deceivers, doubters and hypocrites until they cast away the angels of punishment to the place of shame, the place of the abode.” Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi writes: “Very authentic (Sahih).” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, volume 8 page 125 Hadith 95; Mir’at-ul-Uqul of Al-Majlisi, volume 25 page 295]
