Missionizing the people?

Abu Basir reported that he asked Imam As-Sadiq (a.): “Do I call the people to what I have in my hand?” He said: “No.” I said: “If anyone asks me for the way, will I show him the way?” He said: “If he asks you for the way, then show him the way. If he asks you more, grant him more, and if he rejects you, then reject him.” [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah of Al-Amili, volume 16, page 191, Hadith 6]

وبالاسناد عن أبي بصير، قال: قلت لأبي جعفر عليه السلام: أدعو الناس إلى ما في يدي فقال: لا، قلت: إن استرشدني أحد ارشده؟ قال: نعم، ان استرشدك فارشده، فان استزادك فزده، وإن جاحدك فجاحده

Furat Ibn Ahmad reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “The hearts are averse to our saying (hadith). So whoever agrees with it, grant him more and whoever disagrees with it, leave him alone.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, volume 2, page 193, Hadith 37]

بصائر الدرجات محمد بن أحمد، عن جعفر بن محمد بن مالك الكوفي، عن عباد بن يعقوب الأسدي، عن محمد بن إبراهيم، عن فرات بن أحمد قال: قال علي عليه السلام: إن حديثنا تشمئز منه القلوب، فمن عرف فزيدوهم، ومن أنكر فذروهم

Abu Basir reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: “Do not argue with the people. If the people could love us, they would love us.” [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah of Al-Amili, volume 16, page 191, Hadith 5]

أحمد بن محمد بن خالد البرقي في المحاسن عن أبيه، عن القاسم بن محمد، عن علي بن أبي حمزة، عن أبي بصير، عن أبي جعفر عليه السلام قال: لا تخاصموا الناس، فان الناس لو استطاعوا أن يحبونا لاحبونا

Uqbah reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “Do your thing for the sake of God and do not do it for the sake of the people. What is for the sake of God is for the sake of God, and what is for the sake of the people does not ascend to heaven. Do not argue over your religion, because arguing makes the heart sick. God said to His prophet (s.): “You do not show the way to the one you love, but God shows the way to the one He wants.” (28:56) And He says: “Do you want to force people to become believers?” (10:99) Leave the people alone, because the people took from the people and you took from the Messenger of God (s) and Ali (a) and not from the same. Certainly, i heard my father (a.) say: “If God has foreseen for a servant to pass over to this matter, he will come to it faster than a bird to its nest.” (10:99) [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah of Al-Amili, Volume 16, Page 190 – 191, Hadith 4]

وعنه، عن أحمد، عن ابن فضال، عن علي بن عقبة، عن أبيه، قال: قال أبو عبد الله عليه السلام: اجعلوا امركم هذا لله، ولا تجعلوه للناس، فإنه ما كان لله فهو لله وما كان للناس فلا يصعد إلى السماء، ولا تخاصموا بدينكم، فان المخاصمة ممرضة للقلب إن الله عز وجل قال لنبيه صلى الله عليه وآله: انك لا تهدي من أحببت ولكن الله يهدي من يشاء وقال: أفأنت تكره الناس حتى يكونوا مؤمنين ذروا الناس، فإن الناس أخذوا عن الناس، وإنكم أخذتم عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وعلي عليه السلام ولا سواء وإني سمعت أبي عليه السلام يقول: إذا كتب الله على عبد أن يدخله في هذا الامر كان أسرع إليه من الطير إلى وكره

Thabit Abu Sa’id reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “O Thabit, what is your business with the people? Leave the people alone and do not call them to your matter, for if the inhabitants of the sky and the inhabitants of the earth were to unite to let a servant stray, whom God wants to show the way, they would not be able to do it. Leave the people alone. Let none of you say: “O my brother, O son of my uncle, O my neighbor!” When God wants something good for a servant, He lets His spirit become good, so that He neither hears something righteous without recognizing it, nor hears something dishonest without rejecting it. Then God puts a word in his heart by which he judges his matter.” [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah of Al-Amili, volume 16, page 190, Hadith 3]

وعن محمد بن يحيى، عن أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى، عن محمد بن إسماعيل، عن أبي إسماعيل السراج، عن ابن مسكان، عن ثابت أبي سعيد قال: قال لي أبو عبد الله عليه السلام: يا ثابت ما لكم وللناس؟ كفوا عن الناس ولا تدعوا أحدا إلى أمركم، فوالله لو أن أهل السماء وأهل الأرض اجتمعوا على أن يضلوا عبدا يريد الله هداه ما استطاعوا كفوا عن الناس، ولا يقول أحدكم: أخي وابن عمي وجاري، فان الله عز وجل إذا أراد بعبد خيرا طيب روحه، فلا يسمع بمعروف إلا عرفه، ولا بمنكر إلا أنكره ثم يقذف الله في قلبه كلمة يجمع بها أمره

Kulaib As-Saidawi reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “Woe to you because of the people! When God wants something good for a servant, He causes a stain to appear in his heart which he rejects, whereby he goes around and desires it. Then he said: “If only you would say to people when you speak to them: ‘We went where God went and we chose the one whom God chose. God chose Muhammad and we chose the family of Muhammad.” [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah of Al-Amili, volume 16, page 190, Hadith 2]

وعن علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن ابن أبي عمير، عن كليب بن معاوية الصيداوي قال: قال لي أبو عبد الله عليه السلام: إياكم والناس إن الله عز وجل إذا أراد بعبد خيرا نكت في قلبه نكتة فتركه وهو يجول لذلك ويطلبه، ثم قال: لو أنكم إذا كلمتم الناس قلتم: ذهبنا حيث ذهب الله، واخترنا من اختار الله، اختار الله محمدا واخترنا آل محمد صلى الله عليه وآله

Fudail Ibn Yasar reported that he asked Imam As-Sadiq (a.): “Do we call the people to this matter?” He said: “O Fudail, when God wants something good for a servant, He commands an angel to take hold of him by the neck until He makes him obedient or unwilling to let him transgress in this matter.” [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah of Al-Amili, Volume 16, Page 189 – 190, Hadith 1]
