Question:

What position does Umar Ibn Abd Al-Aziz have in Islam?

Answer:

Sulaiman Ibn Dinar reported that Abdullah Ibn Ata’ At-Tamimi said: “I was in the prayer house with Ali As-Sajjad (a.), whereupon Umar Ibn Abd Al-Aziz came by. He wore silver laces and was one of the most beautiful people in his youth. Ali As-Sajjad (a.) looked at him and said: “O Abdullah Ibn Ata’, do you see this magnificent man? He will not die until he seizes the authority over the people.” I said: “This wicked man?” He said: “Yes, he will dwell among them only to the extent that is easily attainable until he dies. When he dies, the inhabitants of heaven curse him, while the inhabitants of earth beg forgiveness for him.” [Basa’ir-ud-Darajat of As-Saffar, page 190]

Sa’id Ibn Abdillah reported that Abu Basir said: “I was in the prayer house with Muhammad Al-Baqir (a.) when Umar Ibn Abd Al-Aziz entered. He was wearing two slightly reddish robes and leaning against one of his servants. He said: “This young lad will seize the dominion and show himself as righteous and live for four years. Then he will die, and while the inhabitants of the earth weep over him, the inhabitants of heaven will curse him.” We said: ” Do you not mention his righteousness and honesty?” He said: “He seated himself on our place (rulership) and he had no right to it. Then he ruled and showed himself to be just in his effort.” [Al-Khara’ij Wa Al-Jara’ih of Qutb-ud-Din Ar-Rawandi, Volume 1 Page 276 Hadith 7]
