The angels prostrate themselves before the light of the clay of Ali
Al-Mas’udi reported that Salman Al-Muhammadi said: “The devil, May God curse him, came past a crowd that insulted the Commander of the Faithful (a.). So he stood before them, whereupon the people said: “Who is this who stood before us?” Then he said: “I am Abu Murrah.” So they said: “O Abu Murrah, do you not hear our word?” Then he said: “Shame on you. You disgrace your master, Ali, son of Abu Talib.” So they said to him: “How did you know he was our master?” Then he said: “By the word of your prophet: “Whose master I am, his master is Ali. O God, be close to him who was close to him, oppose him who opposed him, support him who supported him, and forsake him who forsook him.” So they said to him: “So are you one of his close friends and followers?” Then he said: “Neither am i of his close ones nor of his followers, but i love him and no one hates him except that i have a share in his possessions and descendants.” So they said to him: “O Abu Murrah, you now say something about Ali.” Then he said to them: “Hear from me, you multitudes of the faithless, the deviants and the apostates. I served God for twelve thousand years among the hidden (Jinn). When God destroyed the hidden, i complained to God about the loneliness. Then i was lifted up to the lowest heaven. So i served God in the lowest heaven for twelve thousand more years among the angels. While we were now in the process of praising and sanctifying God, a shimmering light passed us by. Then the angels bowed down before that light and said: “Most Blessed, Most Holy, Light of an near-by angel or a prophet who has been sent.” Then a call from God came: “Neither the light of a near-by angel or a prophet who has been sent. This is the light of the clay of Ali, son of Abu Talib.” Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi writes: “Perhaps the devil, May God curse him, made them understand the merits of Ali (a.) just to underline the evidence against them, knowing that they will not repent. He made them blind to him so that their punishment would be harsher.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar, Volume 39, Pages 162-163, Hadith 1]
