Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet (s.) said to his uncle: “Say that no one is worthy of worship except God, that i may bear witness for you on the Day of Judgement!” Abu Talib said: “If the Quraish would not dishonor me by saying: “It was only because of concern that he did it!” I would have been a comfort to your eye.” So the verse was sent down: “Thou dost not guide rightly whom thou lovest, but God guides rightly whom He will.” (28:56) [Sahih Muslim, Hadith 25]

حدثنا محمد بن حاتم بن ميمون حدثنا يحيى بن سعيد حدثنا يزيد بن كيسان عن أبي حازم الأشجعي عن أبي هريرة قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لعمه قل لا إله إلا الله أشهد لك بها يوم القيامة قال لولا أن تعيرني قريش يقولون إنما حمله على ذلك الجزع لأقررت بها عينك فأنزل الله إنك لا تهدي من أحببت ولكن الله يهدي من يشاء

Sa’id Ibn Al-Musayyab reported that Al-Musayyab said: “When death was near to Abu Talib, the Prophet Muhammad (s.) came to him and found Abu Jahl Ibn Hisham and Abdullah Ibn Abi Umayyah Ibn Al-Mughirah with him. The Messenger (s.) said to Abu Talib: “O uncle, say: “No one is worthy of worship except God! A word by which I will bear witness to you before God.” But Abu Jahl and Abdullah Ibn Abi Umayyah said: “O Abu Talib, are you turning away from the confession of Abd-ul-Muttalib?” The Messenger (s.) did not stop offering it to him, and the two did not stop repeating that statement until the last thing Abu Talib told them was: “On the Confession of Abd-ul-Muttalib.” He refused to say: “There is none worthy of worship except God.” The messenger (s.) said: “By God, I will ask forgiveness for you as long as I am not denied.” Therefore God sent down the verse: “It is not for the Prophet and those who believe, to ask forgiveness for idolaters, even if they were relatives, after it has become clear to them that they will be inmates of the fire of hell.” (9:113) [Sahih-ul-Bukhari, Hadith 1294]

حدثنا إسحاق أخبرنا يعقوب بن إبراهيم قال حدثني أبي عن صالح عن ابن شهاب قال أخبرني سعيد بن المسيب عن أبيه أنه أخبره أنه لما حضرت أبا طالب الوفاة جاءه رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فوجد عنده أبا جهل بن هشام وعبد الله بن أبي أمية بن المغيرة قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لأبي طالب يا عم قل لا إله إلا الله كلمة أشهد لك بها عند الله فقال أبو جهل وعبد الله بن أبي أمية يا أبا طالب أترغب عن ملة عبد المطلب فلم يزل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يعرضها عليه ويعودان بتلك المقالة حتى قال أبو طالب آخر ما كلمهم هو على ملة عبد المطلب وأبى أن يقول لا إله إلا الله فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أما والله لأستغفرن لك ما لم أنه عنك فأنزل الله تعالى فيه ما كان للنبي الآية

Abdullah Ibn Al-Harith reported that Al-Abbas Ibn Abd Al-Muttalib said: “O Messenger of God, did you provide a benefit to Abu Talib? “For he protected you and was angry for you.” He said: “Yes, he is in a very shallow place of fire, and if it were not for me, he would be in the deepest pits of hell.” [Sahih Muslim, Hadith 209]

وحدثنا عبيد الله بن عمر القواريري ومحمد بن أبي بكر المقدمي ومحمد بن عبد الملك الأموي قالوا حدثنا أبو عوانة عن عبد الملك بن عمير عن عبد الله بن الحارث بن نوفل عن العباس بن عبد المطلب أنه قال يا رسول الله هل نفعت أبا طالب بشيء فإنه كان يحوطك ويغضب لك قال نعم هو في ضحضاح من نار ولولا أنا لكان في الدرك الأسفل من النار

Ibn Al-Hadd reported that Abdullah Ibn Khabbab said: “Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri heard the Prophet Muhammad (s.) when his uncle was mentioned before him say: “He may benefit from my intercession on the Day of Judgement so that he may be taken to a shallow place of fire that reaches to his ankles and from which his brain boils.” [Sahih-ul-Bukhari, Hadith 3672]

حدثنا عبد الله بن يوسف حدثنا الليث حدثنا ابن الهاد عن عبد الله بن خباب عن أبي سعيد الخدري رضي الله عنه أنه سمع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وذكر عنده عمه فقال لعله تنفعه شفاعتي يوم القيامة فيجعل في ضحضاح من النار يبلغ كعبيه يغلي منه دماغه

Najiyah Ibn Ka’b reported that Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.) said: “When Abu Talib died, i came to the Messenger (s.) and said: “O Messenger of God, your old crazy uncle has died!” He said: ” Set out and set him in place. Afterwards, do nothing until you come to me.” So I buried him and came to him after. He gave me an order and I performed the washing (ghusl). Afterwards he said prayers of supplication that pleased me more than anything on earth.” [Al-Musannaf of Ibn Abi Shaibah, Hadith 11258]

حدثنا وكيع عن سفيان عن أبي إسحاق عن ناجية بن كعب عن علي قال: لما مات أبو طالب أتيت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقلت: يا رسول الله إن عمك الشيخ الضال قد مات قال: فقال انطلق فواره ثم لا تحدثنا شيئا حتى تأتيني قال: فواريته ثم أتيته فأمرني فاغسلت ثم دعا لي بدعوات ما يسرني أن لي بهن ما على الأرض من شيء

Najiyah Ibn Ka’b reported that Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.) said: “I said to the Prophet Muhammad (s.): “Your old crazy uncle has died, who shall bury him?” He said:”Go and bury your father and do nothing until you come to me!” So i buried him. Then i fell into ritual impurity (janabah) so that he gave me an order and i performed the ablution (ghusl) and he called me and mentioned a supplication that i did not remember.” Muhammad Nasir-ud-Din Al-Albani writes: Authentic (Sahih).” [Sahih-un-Nasa’i, Hadith 2005]

أخبرنا عبيد الله بن سعيد قال حدثنا يحيى عن سفيان قال حدثني أبو إسحق عن ناجية بن كعب عن علي قال قلت للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم إن عمك الشيخ الضال مات فمن يواريه قال اذهب فوار أباك ولا تحدثن حدثا حتى تأتيني فواريته ثم جئت فأمرني فاغتسلت ودعا لي وذكر دعاء لم أحفظه وقال محمد ناصر الدين الألباني: صحيح

Al-Ajlah reported that Ash-Sha’bi said: “When Abu Talib died, Ali (a.) came to the Prophet (s.) and said: “Your disbelieving old uncle has died, so what are you planning for him?” He said: “I provide that you wash him and bury him.” Whereupon he ordered him to be washed (ghusl).” [Al-Musannaf of Ibn Abi Shaibah, Hadith 11959]

حدثنا علي بن مسهر, عن الأجلح, عن الشعبي, قال: لما مات أبو طالب جاء علي إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم, فقال: إن عمك الشيخ الكافر قد مات فما ترى فيه؟ قال: أرى أن تغسله وتنحيه وأمره بالغسل

Abu Ishaq reported that Najiyah Ibn Ka’b said: “Ali (a.) came to the Messenger (s.) and said: “Abu Talib has died.” He said: “Go and bury him.” Ali (a.) said: “He died as an idolater!” The Prophet (s.) said: “Go and bury him! When i had buried him, i returned to him, whereupon he said to me: “Perform the washing (Ghusl)!.” Muhammad Nasir-ud-Din Al-Albani writes: “Authentic (Sahih).” [Sahih-un-Nasa’i, Hadith 190]

أخبرنا محمد بن المثنى عن محمد قال حدثني شعبة عن أبي إسحاق قال سمعت ناجية بن كعب عن علي رضي الله عنه أنه أتى النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم فقال: إن أبا طالب مات فقال اذهب فواره قال إنه مات مشركا قال اذهب فواره فلما واريته رجعت إليه فقال لي اغتسل وقال محمد ناصر الدين الألباني: صحيح
